Default Ebay still works for some things......

I just scored a brand new Sanden 508 AC compressor off of Ebay for $99 including shipping; not too shabby! Nice thing is, this is a REAL Sanden, not a knock off Chinese 'Sanden type' compressor like you normally get on there. I'm putting air in the fiberglass Scout, and although I have most of what I need, I was short a compressor and a condenser; I think I have a brand new parallel flow condenser bought for $32 including shipping so that AC install will end up being pretty low budget. I don't spend all that much time on Ebay anymore, but there are still a few deals to be had on there.

Nice Score..

It's good when you aren't in a hurry..

I picked up one and the guy didn't wrap it well.. got it cracked..

PITA.. maybe I'll order the parts to fix it when I am ready...

---Nice deal and while the search function and all around format has been everything but pleasant to most, I haven't had any issues finding what I want using the basic search habits I have always used. Sometimes it proves more beneficial to just look up a part number. Not much has changed if you ignore the drop-down boxes and just* search.

---I tend to search US only unless I am looking for Damascus blades, direct plug-in LEDs, or something petty that can take 4-6 weeks to get to me

---I had* (pessimistic tense) a good, Detroit (IIRC), Sanden compressor (w/bad clutch), that was disposed of while I was Service Writer @ Petro. Left it in AL, but it might* be there when I go pick up Papapalooza (1949 P18) in the Spring. You can have it (if you haven't already gotten ready) to compare housings. I'll drop it on the way back up if all goes as planned & it's still there.

---FWIW, the two of you should be able to find a rotary compressor in most of the Jap cars. Pull-a-part is not too* far for either of you and once there, I am sure you'll find a boat load of parts to customize, if not for IH. Great salvage yard. Plenty of them down South. One in IN, four in OH.

Most of the Sandens in the yard on the foreign (or american) cars use the other mounting pattern ( four vertical bolts on the outer sides of the compressor) rather than the 'ear' type like this one uses. This is the style that bolts up to the 'York to Sanden adapters' that are sold by IH Only North and Ebay. Mostly the 'ear type' is used on heavy trucks, buses, etc. The one that I got is supposed to be surplus from Kenworth/Peterbilt; but most big trucks use similar compressors. The seller's store page is here
http://stores.ebay.com/Daves-Trucks?_trksid=p4340.l2563
and it looks like he may have at least one more of those compressors.

Thomas, there are more and more yards going to 'pull your own' status as time goes on; around here, LKQ (which is more known as a high end used parts supplier) even has a 'pull your own parts' yard. I just looked up their web page, and an AC compressor goes for $30 plus $7 core, so I'm feeling even better about the one I got now!

I built a large portion of my 800 off of eBay. If you know how and where to look you can find a lot if you stay at it.

I find it funny that you are working on your A/C system on Jan 20th when it is snowing like crazy and 15-19 degrees out

Oh, I'm not working on it, but I ran across the condenser yesterday and that brought it to mind, so today I figured I'd look at compressors. I guess this is the right time to buy, in summer that sucker would have been double the price. And you are totally right about the weather, I JUST made it home in my car tonight after work on the back road; I packed the engine compartment full of snow, serpentine belt was slipping, lights got dim, steam started rolling from the snow on the exhaust manifolds. Stupid thing is, I have a perfectly good F150 4x4 that I plated this morning sitting at the house, along with the 392 Scout, either one of which would have made that road fun instead of white knuckle. And of course, I drove the car....

You won't hear anything from me, I got a 2 stage vacuum pump from HF yesterday to use on my A/C systems in the spring (had a really good coupon even though it was expensive). Was snowing and 8 degrees out yesterday!
