If its over 30 yrs old here in NC you do not even have to have an inspection here in NC.

Hey Illinois is finally doing something right for once!

Older than '96 no longer tested I believe.

It used to be 30 years here in CA, but, now it's 1975 and older. I have a 79! Bummer!

Now Fred, don't get political here, I am a public servant and I don't feel that I am overpaid for what I do, and I believe public employees are just as hardworking as private workers, and they are NOT paid 2X as much. As for unions backing of a voting party, I believe both sides are equally guilty of special interest ties.

Now, our DMV which was privatized, only tests 1995 and newer, which requires only plugging in the OBD tester. My Scout is exempt from any testing.

Back when most of the American fleet was still carburated, approx. 85% of vehicles passed, so at least 80% of the time, the time, fuel, and effort expended was more than a total waste, instead, adding to the emissions with each fruitless search.

What is the pass rate today?

In AZ, you don't have to test the newest vehicles in non-attainment areas - but you must pay for the test anyway.

Your tax dollars at work.

I argue, and then pull into the front to talk to management. They look it up in their books, and wouldn't you know it, I was right all along.
Failed what exactly? How did the machine determine what "limits" were to be on your vehicle? Did he enter in a different year? A different vehicle type... something that would have had emissions limits based on the roller test? I'm just curious.

Its funny, when I got my '67 from a junkyard in Nevada, got it running, then took it to the DMV to register, they said the vin plate on the door was on with rivets. Funny, because it was actually on there with screws, AND it was a door from a Loadstar (replacement, because the original door was dented up like crazy. I did switch the vin plates of course).
I agree the smog stuff is ridiculous. I commute/drive my truck every day and hardly EVER see a car/truck older than mine. Maybe once a month, if that.
CA used to have the rolling exemption for smog, so when your car got to be 25 years old it would be exempt. They stopped it in 2000 though, so '75 was the last exempt year...

^This... I work for the gov't as well (DoD) and we're paid less than the local private workers that are comparable. If people want to whine about overpaid/underworked gov't employees they should be looking at Congress, not the rank and file.

I'm fortunate... my Travelall is a '67 so it'll never see a test station.

Well, for the year I have the test is for an idle test only. By him telling me to get it up to 55mph put me outside the smog parameters - CO2 ppm, hydrocarbons, etc. No, he entered the correct info of my rig (based on my VIN and plate number) into the system - what he failed to do was follow through with the test for my rig which is IDLE ONLY!!! He had me get up to cruise speed, which threw the testing parameters out the door...

it would pass if it was running right. it had to pass the 48 states smog requirements when new, .
cal. was/is a lot worse, they tightened up the parameters a long time ago.
but I was able to get all the scouts I worked on, to pass smog , ON treadmill smog tests.
idle test are a piece of cake always were...
BIGGEST ISSUE was the 2210 carbs power valve circuit worn out. fix that theyd all be well with in any specs for smog.. co2, nox, h2so4, green chile peppers, and chip dip . .
and those specs are real loose compared to a modern car+post 1990
