the compressor and exhaust specs are different between the two turbos, what most people doing the swap have done is combine the two. The MB exhaust housing is what we are looking for. The goal has always been to get your boost earlier unlike the stock scout turbo that comes at the end of the RPM range. Also many like the adjustable wastegate on the MB turbo.

Is there any danger in using the whole mb turbo? Or any advantage in using the stock compressor over the mb? I did try to research this but could not find an answer.

I put about 20 miles on it throughout the day today. It seems to be working fine. Though a slight concern has arisen... With the exhaust off I can distinctly hear two sounds: the wine of the turbo and the rumble of exhaust. Just now, on the way home there was a third noise, which was a whine, lower in pitch than the turbo. It was more like a police siren but really quiet. (no, I was not outrunning the police:-) ) I have no idea what it is and it's too late on the day to deal with it...

Could the additional sound I'm hearing be the bov working for the first time since I've owned this thing?

Yes or a leak somewhere in the plumbing between compressor and intake manifold

I just ordered a whole 1981 300d turbo off eBay. I was just going to pull the .48 turbine housing, but it seems like nobody has a good reason not to just use the whole thing. They're both T3 turbos, so there really shouldn't be any major differences, right?

The hx30 off a factory 4bt cummins 94-97 would be perfect. Quick spool and about 20 psi of boost.

That would be great for a couple hundred miles. We're talking quick spool and 7 boost on the stock turbo, 12 on the MB. The SD isn't like the cummins where the coal rolls freely and the engine lives to see another day.

It has a wastegate you can set the boost to your preference.

JMattJ - I ran the entire mb turbo on mine for a week or two before it died. I think it was just a little too worn when I put it on. I ended up finding a new cartridge for under $400, shipped.

Maybe you'll have better luck than I did with a used one.

By the way, do you have your Scout running yet? I've got about 3k on mine since the piston transplant (thanks for the donors!) and it's still running better than ever.

Jones, my Scout is running awesome. I just drove it form Maryland to New Mexico. It was billowing black smoke and really starved for air up the passes on the way to Fairplay, CO. That's why I'm trying to install the smaller housing. The turbo I bought off eBay has 240,000 miles on it, and mine only has 56,000 miles, so I guess I'll just swap the housings. I'm glad my pistons worked for you!
