Default Cummins MPG Question

Sorry if this ain't a "Scout" question...but hey, IH sells B5.9s...

The BTA5.9 (early '98 12-valve, 215hp/440 lbs./ft.) in my pickup is only getting is only getting a reliable 18mpg., both city and highway.

Does anyone know if there is common "tune-up type" cause for this particular engine getting such crappy MPG--i.e., injector rebuild, valve lash too wide, etc.? Or a website where I can ask stoopid questions?

What tranny u got in that rig? If its a slushbox I'd be looking that direction... seems to be the weak link with the Chrysler products.

What trany are you running, what axle ratio and what tire size?

The Dodges I've heard of that got good mpg were running tranys with OD and axle ratios of 3.54 or less with 31" to 32" dia tires ie 235/85/R16 or 265/75/R16.

Check for leaks in your air-to-air plumbing first then check your injectors and adjust the valves.

How much boost are you getting?, EGT's? When's the last time you changed air filter?, fuel filter?

A lot of 31x10.50/15 are much less than 31" more like 29".

Another question is how much do you like the skinny pedal?
