Good news on the engine Jay! Was the dist. out 180° when you you got it? Or did you remove it and put it back wrong? Just curious...

Thanks everyone! We very much enjoy looking and learning from all the build threads here on BP too! We scour the thread daily!

The carb was out 180 from TDC. It is possible the wires were just placed 180 out also. I tried to make sure all went in as removed so I'm pretty sure it was incorrect. Also, a funny thing was the amount of oil it had in it. I pulled the plug and filled one container. When that started to overflow I installed the plug and had to get another one. At first I thought “oh no - water!” but I poured it, a little at a time, into a glass jug and it was all oil. I'm thinking someone preserved it? - not sure but it runs very smooth!!

We were able to add water, fuel and fire today and had it running for a few minutes! Good news is that the engine runs very well! Bad news – we had some leaks. Need to replace the water pump gasket but the worst was the fuel system. I had planned on rebuilding the carb and I had replaced the fuel filter/seal on the fuel pump and just hoped they would work. Can you tell the budget we are one with this one? The fuel pump works but is discharging from the area shown in red:

Anyone ever rebuild one of these? I’m wondering if this is something that is part of a rebuild kit or is it toast? I don’t want to spend money on a rebuild kit and find that this area is not covered in a kit. I found this one at Anything Scout (quite expensive!):

On the Holley 1904 carb I have another question. I purchased a rebuild kit and was looking at the instructions. I have two carbs.

The one on the left is the original one that was on the Scout and the one on the right was on the engine I got from BioTex. There is a tube with a screw in it (circled in red). Apparently this was leaking as the PO attempted to use silicon or some type of sealant on it.

There is nothing in the rebuild kit for this and the included diagram does not show this. Anyone know what this is? I’m thinking a vent but not sure. Also, the carb on the engine from BioTex had a governor installed below the carb (you can see this in the pic above - it is the item above the carbs). The original engine did not have this and had shorter studs to mount the carb without this. Does anyone know the purpose of this? I tried to search for each item, read all of this thread: Holley 1904 Carburetor Rebuild but no discussion on the item circled.

Thanks in advance!!

Jay

Good to see your making some progress...

anyway you can get a fuel pump from autozone. its an airtex

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...artNumber=true

on the carb, that is the bowl vent. If it is leaking fom there the float valve is not working for some reason. Or possibly the p.o. plugged it not knowing its purpose. Over at IHonlynorth forums there is a nice thread that talks about about these carbs. The one thing that seems to be a problem is a worn economizer valve. I think that thread shows what to look for and if not there is another thread about the economizer valve that does show it. I ran one for a while that had the bad poppet valve on the economizer and it ran but would sometimes dump fuel at Idle. I would just notice an unstable Idle.

Jay,
I know you are on a budget for this build, but just going to throw it out as an option.

Send both carbs to Micheal Mayben to make one good one out of two. Let him keep the leftovers to reduce the charges.

He did this for me, and you talk about a sweet running engine. No one rebuilds those carbs as well as he does.

Get the Airtex fuel pump Henry mentioned, and if you use a discount code you should get it for around $55 or $60.

Or go electric???

I read that thread rapidly last night and missed the part about the economizer valve. I will have to look at that. I bet you are right on the float level as Micheal Mayben’s thread talks about setting it too high. I'll take that screw out of it tonight and see if there is any damage to it - give it a good cleaning! Appreciate the info!!

That sounds like the best option. I’m going to check that economizer valve as both looked frozen in place and decide from there. Lots of crud in there. I guess for reliability sake I will get the pump from Autozone. I just really like the look of that glass fuel filter! Thanks!!

I did a search for that governor and I guess it was used for running PTO equipment?

I went ahead and rebuilt the carb as it did not seem to be in too bad of shape once I tore into it. We were lucky and the economizer valve functioned properly. The other carb is not so lucky. The economizer valve in it is frozen and the needle valve is broken off.

We shot this video today after the rebuild and getting the Airtex fuel pump installed.

I’m not the best video maker and I was amazed how many Mb’s that was so hope you like it! The last part is of the rear seating area. I’m not sure why we keep getting these with carpet glued everywhere but this had some really nice psychedelic carpet we removed just after purchase and before we knew about BP. I believe we will have to have the roof sandblasted for best results as it was the carpet with the molded in rubber padding.

The engine ran well! We had a leaky water pump and a slight oil leak from where I installed the oil filter adapter but after rebuilding the carb it starts up right away. The exhaust appears to be original so leaky at the manifold and will need to be replaced. The alternator sounds terrible and I think a bearing is shot on the inside of that. Still a very long way from road worthy!!

Jay

That video takes me back a few years listening to the sound of the old 4 banger. Great work Jay! Can't wait to see the rest of the build.
