Thanks Henry! Yes, kind of sad seeing it like that!

Got a box in from IH Only North yesterday and part of the order was some Rough Country shocks. I knew these would be much bigger than the stock shocks but they would not bolt up. They would hit the steering stop on the axle and I could not attach at the upper mount.

They would also hit the steering arm on the knuckle when turned into the steering stop.

At first I thought I would have to return them after searching for a fix and not finding anything that did not require fabricating new mounts. But then I realized I might be able to remove the large spacer (arrow) from the mount and mount the shock closer to the frame with washers.

On top I used two thick washers and on the bottom I used one. I had to use two on top to keep the shock from hitting the frame where the boot attaches.

This allowed about a 1/4” space between the shock and the steering stop on the axle.

It also allowed plenty of room between steering arm and the shock.

Anyone see any problem with this? It does not have full weight of the scout on it but I put a bottle jack between the axle and frame and flexed it some and I did not see any issues.

Thanks!

Jay

Looks like a good resolution to me.
From the pictures, it appears you have the shock mounted in a straight line, so there should be no side loading.
No side loading, no stiction, no harnshness.

Great build! I've been following this one with interest. I am in the process of fixing up my 1967 800. You'd have to check with the shock manufacturer, but some shocks will operate just fine in the upside down position. That might give you a lot more clearance. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see this one completed!

Thanks! That was going to be my first question to Jeff on the fitment of these but looks like they will work now. You should start a build thread!!

Some pics from tonight and you can see the shocks installed. At first they looked huge to me but now I think it looks ok. Jeff from IH Only North was able to track down the red shifter ball in the correct color and size we wanted so got those installed and painted the shifter levers to match.

Big news is that the garage order was placed today! I was able to go a little bit larger and stay within the budget. It came in at 22’ wide x 30’ long with 12’ walls. I have been stuck on garagejournal.com for the last few days looking for ideas so very excited. I guess I should start a build thread over there but I hesitate as the better half is always on me about my internet time! Lots to do so this build may slow down a bit!

Sweet! Bigger is always better, when it comes to shop space!
The shocks look like they line up perfectly. Very nice!
Is this a "Red Carpet" version?
In any case, I like the idea of the red shift balls. Pretty

Another great build, i saw that you guys are still looking for scouts. Do you check out copart at all?

http://www.copart.com/c2/onSaleResul...SEARCH_RESULTS

If that link does not work for whatever reason, there is a '74 Scout at a salvage auction in Abq.
