![]() Some background: We acquired this Scout for $600 in the summer with the thought of copying the Extreme 4X4 build. This was how it looked the day we brought it home: ![]() ![]() The PO stated the Scout had always been in the family and was purchased by his grandfather, then handed down to his son who handed it to his son! He did inform me that the clutch had been replaced recently as well as the rear springs. Problem was the engine had a spun main bearing and they had just parked it after that. I would love to say this is a rust free 80 but not quite. They could not figure out how to get the windows up so that allowed water into the interior and the floors have some corrosion on the drivers/passenger side. Some rust in the lower rocker area and a little on the tailgate. I started the repair on the driver’s side as it was the worst. ![]() ![]() Of course we did not research enough to know that there was a difference in the 80 vs 800 as far as the engine goes and that was one thing we had desired. We purchased the SSII for the axles and V8 for the 80 and, well, you know how that ended up. We named this “Lemon Drop” but now my daughter is not too enthused with this name so that will probably change. Really not sure what direction this will go but some things we will need to upgrade/replace for sure are the axles, brakes and the wiring system at a minimum. We want this to be a reliable vehicle we can safely take on trails and really not worry about scratching! This will be a lot slower build than the other one as this one will probably be a frame off and we have some customization that we want to incorporate. This is our third build we have tackled together and we have a sort of theme we follow. First we have tried to return them to original running vehicles first then go from there. So with that in mind we wanted to get this one running on its own power, repair all rusty areas and, most importantly, have some fun! Some shots of the underneath: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jay |

I was able to purchase an engine from BioTex (Thanks again!!) and we started the removal.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have to also include a pic of my daughter’s boyfriend who has helped out tremendously in both builds! ![]() ![]() This was the "new"engine as we started the cleanup processes. ![]() …and purdied uped! ![]() ![]() Found that Comanche sticker on the valve cover so left that. Going in!! Watch those fingers!!!![]() Jay |

Here it is installed and just wrapping up all of the small things! This will bring the thread up to date were we currently are!!
![]() ![]() ![]() BioTex – it does run! Well, I only ran it for a sec or two but she fired right up after I installed the dizzy correctly (was 180 out). Lots to do!! Found this note when I got home the other day! Makes all of this worth it!! You can bet it won't get "touched up"!! ![]() ![]() Jay |

Hi jmait769,
I enjoyed your first build thread and I know I will enjoy this one. That last post reminded me of those old commercials: "New" Scout 80 - $600 2 cans of IH red paint - $12 Having a daughter interested in IH - Priceless Getting a note like that - Priceless Keeping an eye on her boyfriend - Priceless Etc... You get where I am going with this - thanks for letting us be a part of these adventures! Greg

I have been trying to get my 17 and 21 year old to help me with my WM, but no such luck. They last for 20 minutes and loose interest. I asked one of my sons to take the seats out of the scout and clean the floor up, which he did, but left it all int he neighbors yard and he was no where to be found. They actually create more work for me.
Good luck with the build, I enjoy following your builds.
