That part I'm not totally sure of. The carb had a spray paint cap duct tapped over it, but that is not the best thing... The choke and throttle plates were stuck closed, but when I pull the carb to rebuild it, I will run my bore scope down the intake and look for obvious reasons to dig deeper.

Picked up my '75 J**p master cylinder yesterday, and found a semi local place to get the 1/2-20 inverted flare nuts for 3/16" line. So today while on a parts run for work, I slid by and bought two of the 1/2-20 flare nuts and ten 3/8-24 flare nuts to build the brake system. Total cost, $9.82. Just need to swing in and pick up the wheel cylinders, shoes, and hoses and I can start plumbing the new brakes.

Just an update on this. Between getting the boys off to church, cooking dinner for the police force, and dealing with a nosy neighbor, I was able to pull the carb and have a look inside the intake...

All clean! Oddly, it seems a little to clean. There isn't even soot build up like I was expecting. I know that this Scout has been rebuilt a few times, but I do not know the extent of the work, how long ago it was performed, or to what extent. It's possible that the last time (owner before the guy I got it from) it was totally redone engine and all. There isn't really any grease or oil on the chassis, all the fluids are topped off and clean (aged, but clean), and the body just keeps looking better and better.

I have found evidence that the right front was damaged, but they did one heck (almost slipped there) of a good job straightening out the inner fender in front of the radiator support. The SOA looks good, could have been cleaned up a bit more, but the work is solid. The rear shocks are funky though. The right side is mounted to the top of the spring while the left is mounted below the axle...

The drop pitman arm is another "crafty" little bugger. Actually looks semi-factory. The drag link is bent, but it looks as though it was bent on purpose...

Anyway, I have now crawled over, under, through, in, out, on, and any other applicable preposition you can think of and have noted less damage than my wife's '08 Super Crew, and only rust in the rear "C" channels below the bed.

Started out this morning to pull all the brake lines out of the Scout. Only had one bolt put up a fight, but with a little sweet talk, it came out just fine. Other than the heads, the bolts looked bran flippin' new. there was no rust or discoloration on the threaded portion of the bolts that secured the line to the body, and every flare nut came right without a fight. I then pulled the heater so I would have better access to the master cylinder.

After that, I decide to check the front tires. They keep going flat and I figured it was from sitting flat for years and the beads had rusted. My oldest son, Guss, watched and learned how to do a trail repair and wanted me to tell you all haw to do it. I figure you all know this trick, but he's 9, so (lucky for me) in his mind I still work miracles. So I told him that he should tell the story.

So assuming it's ok, here is Guss telling what he did today;

We worked hard today. Here is what I did. The front tires were going flat fast. We put air in them and they would be flat again in just no time. So daddy fixed the one and showed me how to do it so I got to do the other one.

Taking the tire off was hard because they are heavy. Maybe even more than me! But I got it off and rolled it to the other side where the tools were. Then I had to air it up and check for leaks.

Daddy said they were leaking around the rim and he was right on his side so he thinks this one is to from sitting with flat tires for a long time. So I sprayed it with sea foam and looked for bubbles.

Then I let the air out of it again.

Then I used the prybar to get the tire off. This was really hard and I kept slipping. But I finally got it though. It took forever.

Then I made Beau hole the prybar and I cleaned the rim so we could get the rust and old tire stuff off.

And then I sprayed it with WD-40 and aired it up again. This time when we checked for bubbles, there were only some tiny ones in one place and daddy hit the side of the tire with a hammer and they stopped. So I put it at 35 with the little tire checker and put it back on the Scout.

and now it is taller than me. I can barely see in it on my tippy toes. Daddy had to climb on the bumper to reach the hood to close it. It was funny because he almost fell. Daddy said for all my hard work I can have the Scout letters that go on the other side where I did the tire.

Then we went and ate pizza with momma. She has to work tonight and baseball practice was canceled. Tomorrow I'm gonna help bend all the new silver lines that daddy took out of the Scout today.

Well, I'd say he did a good job. Before the tires would be flat within a few minutes. This morning they are both still holding at 35 psi.

Time to get some lines bent up.

Now that we have the tires up, today we removed all the old hard lines and master cylinder. Then I installed the new J**p duel circuit master and made all new hard lines. I took care of the ones on the axles due to the number of bends, but I taught Guss how to make an inverted flare and he did the hard line from the rear axle all the way to the axle. A few of the bends were a bit off, but nothing that couldn't be fixed. We didn't get to replacing the wheel cylinders because tonight was his end of the season baseball party. But he'll be doing his first full brake job soon.

Good job Guss (and Ray Dean)
[safety nazi] Eye and ear protection[/safety nazi]

It's a wonder the air isn't leaking out through the giant cracks in the sidewall

Ray Dean, is that stock spring under or did the PO do a spring over lift? Looks a little taller. How's the steering set up?

From what I cal tell, they are stock springs and shackles, but with a spring over using homemade spring perches that are maybe an inch or two taller than "normal". As for the steering, it's all factory but with a drop pitman are.

And yes, they were both wearing face shields (can't get safety glasses small enough to fit) and ear muffs from the gun range. The rim was already done when I took the picture. He's just holding it down there for the pose.

Good news/bad news. The tire Guss repaired is still holding at 35psi, however the one I did on the drivers side is slowly going flat. It's at 12psi this morning. I didn't figure these tires would hold air, but wanted to give it a shot because a roller beats one that you can't move at all...
