I would look around this site and all of the post. Take your time...But be ready to buy when you find what you want. Also I would try and attend Nationals or some more local events. You will get a lot of great info and get many great ideas. And you might find a Scout pretty close to what your looking for. Most of the time you can find it cheaper than you can build it.

I just took a little detour on my way back to the shop (work not home) and checked out a Scout that I heard about. It doesn't appear to be in bad shape (minor body rust, but didn't get to check the floor boards). SOA has been done, and it ran a few years ago. That's all the owner knows about it.
He bought it about 20 years ago to use as a "huntin' buggy", sent it to Colorado several years ago to be "restored", they had it for a year and a half without doing anything to it, so he went and picked it up, and it is still sitting where he unloaded it. Now here's my problem... This guy has no clue what year it is. I asked and he said "The guy I got it from said it was a 1980." Well, I don't "know" my binders THAT well, but it's not a 1980. I'll buy that it's an 80... But I don't know what year, and I'm getting conflicting info. Can someone shed some light on it for me? Here we go, it has : 1) lay down windshield with top mounted wipers 2) IH logo centered in the grill 3) Twist door handles with integrated locks 4) Roll up windows All straight forward Scout 80 stuff right? But it ALSO has the round reflectors that appear to be OE. What am I missing? I've looked through every piece of literature and read every post that I can find on the subject including the 80/800 pictorial identification page here in the knowledge bass.... I used my phone to take a few pics that I'll load once I get home in about an hour to add visual stimulus. |

Sounds like an 80 to me. Did you take any interior pics. And I'm with the guys who said dont worry about cloning a comanche. Heck I'm cloning a SR-2...kind of. Lol! This should be a really cool project.

By my figurin', this is between a '63 and '65. Anybody else get any closer with pics to help out.....?
All Scout 80 idintifiers.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() These are throwing me though. Has'em at all four corners. Unless I'm wrong, they shouldn't be there on an 80.

IMO, the outline of those reflectors show them to not be factory.....just another PO modification.

Check the VIN. One of the 80/800 fans on here has a database he has built of VINS with verified build dates from all submitting owners' Line Setting Tickets. Could help narrow the build date down within a couple of months.

That's what I was thinking at first, but I've never seen an 800A in person to know what they should lookd like. All four match (amber in the front, red in the rear) and they have IH and a part # on them so that got me to questioning myself.

The dash will tell better than anything else,it will have 2 large round gauges and no dash pad.But the tip down windsheild and the door locks tell me scout 80

I now have the VIN, but don't know who to ask about the database... ![]() Defiantly an 80, bench seat, non-removable bulkhead (from what I can tell), other than that, it still has the headliner, and it was originally red... Planning on getting it to the house this weekend. We'll have to see what mother nature has in store for us first though. EDIT: Never mind. I finally got the page to open. I've clicked the link in the knowledge base several times, and it never would open. According to the numbers and years provided, it's a '63. Thanks.

-Welcome to the premier IH website,
---Wonderful story I must say. I wish you luck on your quest to rebuild, as well as share and reconstruct those childhood memories with your own bairn. ---Sorry no one has posted this yet, but here is a link to history/identification written by the lil' brothers of the big company International Truck and Engine. They will have all the info you need on the VIN. Yes, they're still in business and we owe them a lot. ---You are also taking a journey toward owning a piece of American Iconic History. Cloning a Comanche would probably start & end with the pain job, but at least you and yours will have fun working on it. Gathering parts will come natural with owning one and they are around, for sale still, either build a toy or find one and buy one outright, then restore. ---No idea if this is too far for you, but one was recently posted on Oregon's Craigslist. As mentioned, most* of us IHers are good souls and you never know if the seller wouldn't mind meeting you half way... if that's not too far. Shipping would probably be around $1.5k to $2.5k, but on a trip like that, but I would talk to them on the phone for 72+ hours, get recent pics of everything and then fly out to get it if it was "for real". ---Packing an SV8 into an 80 that wasn't built for an SV8 is a task, but it has been done. There should be write ups here about it... when you search eliminate the words "international", "scout" and anything else that would be found in nearly every post. "conver*", "adapt*" "80" and "v8" and honestly, I would use google for less cluttered and much more accurate search results. Go to google and put site:binderplanet.com in, then your keywords with spaces between and surround each keyword/phrase "with quotations"... or bookmark this page. ---I would definitely not post the vehicle's SSID (VIN) on the net where anyone can view it, so I'd it off threads.
