I will also say that a simple $20 block heater will make a huge difference. If you can get power to the parking area, plug it in on a timer. Run it for a couple of hours and the amount of start up smoke will be very small. Its a messy job to install one of those little heaters that replaces a freeze plug. You can also get a circulating type that is a little easier to install but costs closer to $60.

Rebuilding the engine might reduce cold start up smoke but it wont eliminate it.

It doesn't get very cold in the 'saus'; about 40 is the lowest. However, there are many that will complain about the smoke (even if it is biodiesel).

So no ideas about catching the smoke at the tailpipe on first startup? Once she's warmed up it's all good. It is just that first 30 seconds or so. Some sort of large filter like on a shop vac or something?

Cheers,
I run bio and feel like it smokes much less with it bs petro. But at start up u r right the flashpoint difference is prob what is causing yours to smoke more until warm. I am in the same boat as you, just b/c it is bio does not keep people from judging you about the amount of smoke u billow out at start up. To those not in the know about diesels, which is 90% of Americans, they only see the smoke and assume your engine is burning oil.

One suggestion is to install an air intake heater like cummins engines have. With block heater, upgraded glow setup, and that you should have Very little smoke.

I used a Champion CH-3 Glow Coil in my SD33 NA intake.

So thanks for all the replies, I got my startup smoke under control now. That intake heater mod is excellent.

Now I am after another smoke issue...a small puff of white smoke when I first take off from a stand still in first gear. All the other times it seems ok (perhaps because I am already moving and the breeze is dissipating the smoke).

Does this mean I have a head gasket issue? It is nice to have people keep a good 100 feet behind me but the passing "get a tune-up" comments are becoming annoying.

What do y'all think?

Cheers,
Casey

Hey Casey, good to hear the intake heater did the trick. I was planning the same thing but was having a little trouble coming up with the heater. What did you end up using and where did you buy it?

White smoke usually equates to un-burnt fuel in a diesel. The typical white smoke gassers put out with a head gasket issue is generally masked in a diesel application. I've seen lots of diesels with cracked heads that didn't smoke at all but were using coolant that couldn't be accounted for. If you are not using or topping off your coolant then its not a head gasket issue.

Can one of these glow coils be used in a turbo application SD-33T?

They most certainly can, however it is a little more difficult to find a good place to install it in the air intake.
