Default D Series Radiators

Guys,

I know some of the D series owners here have been having problems getting radiators. I talked to one of my buddies here in town who owns a radiator shop, and he said it shouldn't be a problem, so I let him borrow my two of my stash for measurements (one auto, one manual) and he said as long as he had the original tanks, he could do either one for $300, plus shipping. He said if there was a lot of interest, he may could cut the price even lower. Let me know if anyone is in need.

I was quoted double that at a local shop to recore mine. JR has been sitting for going on 2 yrs now. I need to get one in there and get that truck back on the road. I left my radiator and another potential core at that shop and they're likely long gone.

I need an auto rad and I'm definitely interested!

Mitch, any chance you need a spicer 5 spd with SV bell, clutch, & chelsea PTO?

I thought it was a good deal, he can also do Scout II and 800 radiators, and he does tank linings, but I didn't get a price on those. I just happen to have some loose D series radiators and I knew there was a problem getting them at a resonable cost.

Got the radiator this week and it looks like a quality job. I can't even tell it's not the original core aside from the fact it's perfect and new. A few questions before I drop it in ...

What's the best way to "flush" the old coolant from the engine?

I've just replaced all the heater hoses because they were trash. When doing so, I flushed the heater just by running water through it with the garden hose. What I flushed was very black (same as what I drained from the entire system) as if this system has had a leak stopping additive used at some point.

I guessing the block is still full of this crap too. How do I go about flushing it? Lower hose is off, upper is on. I've got a new lower hose.

I can easily fill it from the heater hose connections. Should I just plug the lower water pump connection, fill it up, and then let it drain from the lower water pump connection. Do this a few times?

I might suggest using you old rad to prevent any crap getting into your new one for this process, but here goes. Drain old coolant, fill with tap water with all hoses in place and heater valve open. Allow it to run till the thermo opens and drain. Do this a couple times. If you choose to you can add some coolant system flush during one of the cycles. Last time you fill use only distilled water. Allow thermo to open one last time and drain. Throw your new rad in and fill with 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. Good to go.
