Default 14 inch air cleaner

i recently installed a 304 into my 78 terra. when i purchased the engine it didnt have a carb or air cleaner. i had an old holley 2150 lyin around and a 14x3 air cleaner. after buying a riser so the air cleaner would clear the t-stat housing, my hood wont close. Is there anyone running any other aftermarket air cleaner assembly that looks good and has plenty of clearence? I thought of using a 1" element but thought it would look kinda funny. I dont have the oem assembly so i dont have a reference for size.

thanks.

PS I know i should run a holley 2300 carb, but a free carb is better than no carb.

IME, if the air cleaner base is flat (bottom of element level with the mounting flange on the carb) it will clear the T-stat housing without a spacer on any of the standard air cleaner flange carbs. I usually run a 1" spacer under an Edelbrock 14XX carb. If you don't run a spacer under the carb you might need a spacer above it depending on the carb. In any case you want insulation between the carb and manifold as the IH manifolds are HOT!

On a ScoutII/Traveler this allows a 2" element with a flat top, but the wing nut and stud will dent the hood. Replace them with the appropriate length bolt and you're golden. This works with a 2300/41xx Holley or 14XX Edelbrock for sure, others you'd have to check.

HTH,

Will Marsh

I didnt install a spacer under the carb but i did use the 1/4" insulating base gasket.

It will actually work with the air cleaner top upside down, so the 2" filter would probably do it. Ill see if i can get one tomorow.

Early 70's Cadillacs had an air cleaner of large diameter that set lower than the carb top that will fit your application.

You can also buy an offset air cleaner to miss the thermo housing. The setup IHON sells has a base plate that drops down below the top of the carb to allow for a bigger filter.
