It's a single barrel holley carb, also then just plug off the hole running from the oil filler neck.

You can use an aftermarket dry air cleaner on find and assy. from a later model 196. For the aftermarket you would need to match or adapt to the air intake on your carb.
I would run the hose to the bottom of the dry cleaner. That is you crankcase vent. If you were to plug it off you would build up pressure and blow a seal or gasket. They make the little K&N looking filters you could adapt for it. Most of the chain store have them. And most aftermarket cleaners have a knock out to run the vent to.

I had a 1965 and upgraded to a 196, just like this. I ditched the oil bath cleaner and went to a boneyard and scrounged a paper element style from an old Ford with a 1bbl. It even had the pellet style thermostat to open the snorkel, and I ran the thin metal hose from the commonplace heat stove tin found on the side of the V8s. The only mod I needed was cutting a piece of PVC tubing to serve as an adaptor between the Holley 1920 and the air cleaner (basically just a stub a couple inches tall, if that. Real easy).

Ok do you take everything off the flange of the carb like so and measure from corner to corner? That's 2 1/4"
![]() Or do you keep this piece on and measure from corner to corner on this? Cause this is what hold the air filter to the carb. It doesn't have a stud like normal carbs do in the middle. From side to side this measures 2"

The 1940(?) Holley carb that was on my 1980 196 mounted the correct air cleaner onto the base as depicted in the first pic. There's a "bail" that straddles those two upright pieces and a mounting stud comes up out of the center of that. That stuff is boxed up or I'd take a pic of it for you (engine's all apart).
When I did the Ford air cleaner thing, I used the adaptor you show (with the stud in the middle) and cut down a piece of PVC pipe to serve as a spacer that slid down on that smaller diameter you've marked out. Can't help you beyond that. Best thing to do is find a Scout l-bbl air cleaner. But definitely ditch the oil bath!

I used a paper element filter from an IH "Commanche" six. Mounted right on the carb as in your second picture.

Make sure and vent your crankcase. You don't have room on that style air cleaner.
You will want to filter it. To keep dirt out of the crankcase.
