Default Multi-Port Fuel Injection/4L80E upgrade

This thread is dedicated to the installation of a multi-port fuel injection system onto my 1962 C-130 4X4 truck. A short bit of history. This truck is the first International I purchased. A friend of mine saw it on the side of the road near Riverside, California, and told me that "Internationals are a great American built truck and that if you want a truck that will last......" needless to say I went and bought it. I have since then taken the truck completely apart and serviced every component part including rebuilding the engine, axle's. I sand blasted all the sheet metal including the frame. Zero Rust primer on the frame with clear over the top gives a nice mat looking finish. Used DP 40 LF to seal the sheet metal and top coated with acrylic enamel.

The truck gets about 8 mpg with the Edelbrock 1406 carb. I will post fuel economy numbers once the fuel injection is installed up and running.

The system consists of an aluminum RPT manifold from IH Only. For specifics on installing the RPT manifold see this FAQ The rest of the component parts are from the wrecking yard.
The wiring harness is from a 1988 2500 Chevrolet pickup truck. The distributor is from a late model Buick(stick with the chevy distr) and is the seven pin large cap. But the rotor plate had to be reindexed since it was a CCW not CW rotation distr. This changed the rotor phasing. I had a machinist adapt this distributor top onto an existing 4 pin "Willis" large cap distributor that was in the truck already. The pickup was also changed at this point to the Chevrolet style.
The Holley throttle body that will be used in this conversion is from a 1997 V8 Jeep.
The computer is a 7427 out of a 1994 Astro Van CPI 4.3 V6. For specifics on what mods need to be done to use this PCM with a MPFI system see this FAQ.
More information to follow. This will wet your appetite hopefully.

Oh by the way this conversion is made possible with the expert assistance and technical wizardry of Bill Hamilton from Hamilton Fuel Injection fame.
Stand by.........

Spent memorial Day weekend working on the installation process. Completed initial routing of the wiring harness. Mounted the fuel pump, feed lines and return line. Installed fuel pressure regulator. Picked up a piece of 1/2" plate aluminum from the recycle and fabricated an adapter for the throttle body.

Installed the throttle body, injectors and fabricated some slick fuel rail adapter plates to make mounting the fuel rails easier. A piece of an old road sign performed nicely. For the time being brass fittings were installed on the fuel rails and plain F.I. hose was used to route the fuel system. Once all is up and running perfectly, then some "Bling" will be added to spruce it up.

Continuing work on the wiring and re-pinning the PCM connector plugs proved to be an arduous task, but perseverance was the ticket to get the work done on Sunday. Installed O2 sensor and the wiring for the fuel system. It was a bit like "Brain Salad Surgery."

The truck came to life at about 8:30 Sunday evening. Now the tuning begins.
Don't change that channel......

The system is up and running. The 1406 that I had installed in 2004 and had finely tuned was no comparison at all to this Multi-Port conversion. Still need some more tuning and finishing up touches, but I am extremely pleased with the conversion and am looking forward to getting some numbers up on the board in regards to MPG and further performance data.
I am in the middle of doing an alternator install on the truck and powder coating the valve covers and thermostat housing. Going to install an 89 Caprice air cleaner and hook up the IAT.
The more sensor data, the more accurate the tune.....

Chris

Texas is a great dog. He lives the consummate dog's life. No worries in the world, just guarding his masters property and keeping all the I.H. iron safe and secure.

Nice truck!

Sweet install as well, glad to see your making the change to a modern charging system as EFI likes/requires a good clean supply of 12 volt power.

The Caprice air filter is a very trick item I came up with for Scout II about 10 years ago. It was the only one I could find that was low enough for hood clearence on the Scout II. But you have a lot more room so the door to JY late model GM air filters with tubing for cool air and hot air are probably anything. HTH!

The truck is up and running beautifully. More tuning still needs to be done, but I am totally impressed with the change in engine operating characteristics. My son says it sounds like a ralley car now. I will have MPG stats as soon as the truck sees some driving on the highway etc..
Will post some more pics tonight that details the system in a near completed state.
Saw that Bill has some stuff listed for sale in the machine shop forum. looks to be decent prices, he puts lots of work into everything that is produced.

Drove to the Binder Bash this weekend with the wife and son. Avg. was 12 MPG with the best run being 13 mpg going about 60 mph on level terrain. The drive time was about seven hours each way so the stats are pretty good. With more tuning etc.., we may see some slight improvement. The best I got with the edelbrock on this motor was about 8 mpg and it was a new carb that I tuned to its best performance abilities. Big thumbs up for MPFI !
