I think what's happened is the previous owner put a different axle on one side because it's been resplined and it's too long, by about 1/8th inch. This is after I went completely through the axle and ordered all the right parts and fixed the botched up job from the previous owner. I have about 300thousands shim on it to get it to work, but that isn't right. So I think I am going to have a shop grind the axle to the right lenght. I need to know what the length of the rear axle is from the back of the bearing to bearing. Any idea where I might find this information?

Does it have a Power Lok in it? if so the thrust shoe that goes between the axle and center pin may be out of place?

I don't believe that's the case. Isn't this axle too old to have that?

I owned a stock '61 Scout with Powr-Loc, and yes, the spacer plug sat between the two axles.

If the axle is a powerlock the most common problem is the thrust blocks falling loose. On these axles the block are held in with a roll pin which wears with age and allows the 2 blocks to fall loose.

How do I tell if it has powerlock? When I turn the wheel on one side, it goes the opposite direction on the other wheel.

If the opposite wheel turns in the opposite direction, either you have no PowerLoc or a very worn one.

I'll bet you got 2 long axles instead of 1 long and 1 short, the long side being the driver's side. I can't say for sure at this point but IIRC the difference between right and left was around 3 or 4 inches. You also may have an axle from a later centered diff instead of a short one. Call Mike at MR Scout, 541-935-3232; he can verify your details, and may have the correct axle you'll need.
