Do not know for sure for "C" models, but I think the "main" tank was mounted in a rear fender well - like the "D" models. IMO, a tank mounted between the frame rails in the rear would be a PO addition. So, a PO cleaned up / "rust-proofed" the cross members.

The 3rd tank is on the LST. Possibly a dealer installed item. It even had an IH part number stenciled on it.

I was told they are dealership options. There are a few around and they all seem to be made with the same parts.
Marty, by coincidence mine came from Nevada also. {Reno}

If it is on the LST, I would assume it was factory installed; though the dealer could probably get all the pieces and install it, too. Stumbled across your post on the tank in Triple Diamond -- great info / documentation

My 68 Travelall 1100C was the same way; brick color primer. It looked to be in good shape though. I primed, painted and undercoated everything under there, including the wood.
I was supprised to see an assumed factory heat gaurd sheet metal plate scewed into the wood above the exhaust arch over the axle. Nice touch! Also looked like the rocker panels were made of galvanized steel. Someone was thinking about longevity back then... PS: Mine was originally purchased in Utah, but I bought it in Riverside County, CA. Don't know how long it was where? No rust to speak of other than the fresh air crowl vent system

Very cool, now I know what the piece of sheetmetal is on there for... A heat shield! I'm still learning!
