Contact the NC License and Theft Bureau (through the DMV) and have them come out and perform a VIN check on the truck (free). They will tell you if you need to get a Bond for the title or simply apply for a lost title through Raleigh. It's a pretty easy process, with about 4 forms you have to fill out.

I've had to do this with old, vintage motorcycles from the '70's.

Can you do that if the truck was last titled in SC? I thought you had to show some proof of ownership. Its never been titled in NC nor in my name.

The whole out of state thing complicates it for some reason. I recently had my Harley title swapped into my name, previouslly a PA title. Those guys take their job real serious. I am the second owner of this fully documented Harley and the guys acted like it "might" have been stolen at some point. It took almost 90days to get the title back. So I can't assume that there will be anything easy about getting the paperwork on your Scout. You will for sure need at minimal a bill of sale from the "estate." It could just be that the local inspectors are jerks too.

Finally got a work weekend in. Thanks to Ted for putting up with me and letting me use his facility, I promise, I didn't steal any tools!

Friday started with 17 red ant bites and emptying out the truck of all the BS that was in it along with getting the liftgate and tailgate to open. It appears it was last registered in 2002.

The laundry list of what was in the truck, acorns lots of them, a clay pigeon thrower, electric trailer winch, and tons of trash. Two gigantic bags to be exact.

Saturday started with take the stupid alarm off the truck and general inspection.

Specs: 2.72 gears, looking like 345, accept the 5 is upside down on the block, so it looks like a 342

Engine bay after it was cleaned up a little.. Notice the alternator is in the wrong spot, it has some weird idler pulley, and a weird water neck.

We figured out why it was parked, which is a good thing. The rear axle shaft bearing was trashed.

A little of Ted's mojo we had it out with no carnage to the axle housing. Thanks to Ted (and Andy) for a replacement!

We got the motor to run, but it won't idle, going to investigate that today. The motor is super clean from looking inside the valve cover, cleanest I've seen, and it sounds like a swiss clock!

We also replaced a weeping freeze plug, changed the oil, changed the rear gear oil, and took her for a short ride. Let me tell you, 2.72 gears, don't like to go slow!

Some cool stickers:

A 1980 345 'should' have come with a Thermoquad, and yours is a two barrel. And the carb set up looks original, with all the connections, dashpots and such on it. I think that the 2.72's only came with the 345, so either somebody swapped intakes, put an earlier two barrel engine in it, or something? The water neck is the standard 1980 version, it's different than the earlier models, it does away with the tall thermostat housing with the bypass hose in it. The upper hoses for that engine are not all that easy to find, if you need one I'd go straight to one of the Light Line dealers, I tried the Rock Auto route on the 1980 Midas Traveler I had and I wasn't satisfied with how it fit. It was 'close but no cigar', I was able to make it work but I should have gotten the 'real' hose from LL or used a 'flex' type.

Great progress, you would have probably gotten more done if you had come to Anderson for lunch though! So what is the final out come? Street ready?

Day two started with this find:

Of course Ted had the right equipment to weld this back together.

I also wrestled with the tranny doing a little service.. Did I tell you how much I hate messing with auto trannys? They suck. Tranny fluid was pretty worn, but got it back together.

Once everything was back together I did a little cleaning. South Carolina was asking for its dirt back.

Once everything was back together I was surprised to find that she now idles, I guess since the carb was sitting with gas in it, the gaskets swelled and now she some what idles.

I took her for a ride around Ted's property before parking her.

A few more shots..
