For balance you'll want that front support as near to the front of the inner rocker as possible. There and the location in front of the frame kick up in the rear wheel well area or the very back of the inner rocker balances the body pretty well at least when the front end and top are on. In addition to swapping frames on my Cab Top I had to take the body off of my Traveltop to re-weld the clutch pivot ball stud when it broke off.

So given that, if I want to avoid the height issue, I should try and place both scouts just outside my garage and proceed with my normal plan then?

I guess it depends on the height of your garage. When I had the body off of my Traveltop I did it in my garage and the door still had room to open. However I wasn't rolling the frame out in that case and there would not have been enough room to put a 2x under the rockers and over the trans.

In the case of this swap, I dont plan on moving the frame that is in the garage.I want to leave that frame where it is and carry the new body to it, in the same manner in which im removing the old. I currently have 12" of spare room between the lowest point on my garage door and highest on the scout, and that is measured with it sitting on fully inflated tires, so I am sure I can gain a few inches buy putting the axels on some 4x4's or the like and removing tires. Does this seem correct or am I in the wrong direction completely?
* EDIT: So my buddy john and I were going over the scout late last night, and I have found that my manual steering box is shredded. I dont know the extent of the damage but it is a goner. I called a local JY, and they just got in a 75 scout II which is complete with P/S. Im hoping it is a a V8 truck. If so, im going to snag the parts and go ahead with the conversion. If not, I will have to wait and piece together the conversion from diff. online retailers as this stuff is regretably getting harder to find. yay classic stuff! haha.

Personally I like the idea of rolling the frame out and leaving the body in position but many have done the lift and carry the body off and back on. If you take the rear tires off and lower it so the drums are basically on the floor, with blocks under the spring mounts you should have more than enough height clearance. The one thing that I would wonder about is your garage a single wide door? If so I can see issues with there not being enough room for the body and guys on each side to walk it out the door. If you've got a 2 car garage with a single door then it shouldn't be a problem.

I have a single car garage, but with the scout in it, still have at least 14" on either side of the scout to get through the door. So im thinking of using 2x pieces of 2x6 around 8ft long under the selected spots, and lifting it. I will position the rolling chassis behind scout in garage currently and take its body off and walk it temporarily the the right parking spot, and then carry the current bad body to that frame and secure it, and ready to load it on trailer to be scraped. With that done, I will then roll old scout back, and carry the usable body onto the frame in garage. But to reduce work, im now thinking I should roll current scout to infront of garage, take the good body off roller and set it aside, then just have to walk body off of bad scout to the right and set it down, and then walk new body to the left and over current frame, then roll back into garage, and untilize the outside space so that no frame has to move until ready to be loaded on trailer. Im wanting to use this method mainly because I dont want to have to move the frame with the engine on it around as im working with tight parking arragements at my complex. I have 1 spot in front of garage and 1 spot to the right of my garage (see image) plus garage space itself. This probably isnt making sense, but im trying my best to explain my intentions.

The lift off and back on process shouldn't take that long so can you borrow part of your neighbors area for a hr or so? Then you can do all the heavy lifting outdoors and not have to worry about height or width of the garage.
In regards to the PS conversion if the one in the wrecking yard is stock it's going to be a V8 if it has PS. Check out this thread to learn a little more about the conversion. http://www.binderplanet.com/forums/s...d.php?t=111898 |

Ok, ill go with that method. The P/S setup is coming from a 304 Scout II as well. Its the bracket, pump, pulley, two hoses, gearbox, and pitman arm. I just need the belt. My scout already has the cast pulley for the P/S on the crank so Im good there as well. Im scoring all the P/S parts for 160 bucks from the J/Y. My donor scout also comes with a P/S box, but its from a 1980, so from what I gather it has the wrong hose connections. Am I right?

So guys and gals, a few days back a friend and I hopped in his roll back and FINALLY picked up the donor. Im at a fork in the road on this. This truck still has LST in glove box, and all the VIN related tags with it. But with the frames being diff, I think im still going to swap the plate from the 72' so its all "matching" per-se. Im not going for show quality resto anyways. All that aside, here are some pictures of the donor. I tried to get a half decent picture of where the driver side floor was "replaced" it doesnt look like the guy did TOO bad a job, but I think I may buy new floors anyways and have a shop weld them in for me. Dont know yet.
