Rumor has it, he and she had a good time at the show.

I didn't go. I needed to make sure I got the crank out and to the crank grinder as quickly as I could - then found out he was on vacation for a few days and wouldn't have had a chance to look at it until the middle of last week.

I'm waiting to hear from the crank grinder that I need to come pick it up.

I had a little undesired excitement tonight that almost put this 196 on.. uh.. back-burner and farther out..






Fortunately, it didn't cross the road, so all is well for now.

Stan, I am waiting to get the motor back so I can get Tony's Scout home to him. I have been steady pushing the rock up the hill, I got a rebuilt 345 in this truck and it is out for exhaust. Leona took a first place for her go cart, and I took a first with my Scout 80. The show was a blast we also had a day trip through Anaconda, a very beautiful old mining town. It has lots of mountains, lakes, and there is always lots of outdoor activity's. Here's a look at the Scout I am rebuilding now and Leona rap checking the cart at the Bash.

Tom looks like you and a pile of Harvesters were spared.

Damn Tom, that's scary. Luckily it was just a grass fire which are relatively easy to put out.

Right now, we have 9 fires across Colorado. Nothing is close to me which is good.

Well, that fire burned back on itself and I thought all was good - unless it went back towards town, jumped the road, and headed up.. which it did on Tuesday. Fortunately, it didn't get too far on my side, but they did evacuate the area.

I picked up the re-polished crank on Friday, but to double check the cam timing I needed to wait on a "piston stop tool" used to confirm when you reach TDC both directions (or something close to it - it's only important that the piston stops at the same spot both directions, so you can determine the "center line" position). That tool should be at my house today.

i hope to take enough time off work tomorrow to get the crank re-installed, degree the cam, and button it back up.

I delivered Tony's Scout to Tom Mandera today so he can put his stamp of approval on the 196. 10 hours in the Travelette and 44 gallons on premium, gota love a well built Harvester. Montana is known for two seasons, winter and road construction, I had a full day of construction Good news is the truck ran great, XM radio was nice, AC worked good and my new aluminum trailer pulled great (but the construction killed the fenders). Here are a couple pictures from Tom's place.

We had a deicer to replace the burners on, my service truck is cool but again GAS is killing me.

11 mpg ain't bad at all, Robert - and it's probably better than that by a touch.

~480 miles would be 10.9mpg. That's going I-90 one way, Hwy 12 on the return.

On it's way back to Billings. My old built 345 sounds good in Robert's Travelette, and pulls well enough I'm told. Brings a tear to my eye to hear it rumble as he pulled away.




Cory - a check for the engine core went out this morning.

Robert has a check in his hands to cover paying someone else to build the second 196, including freight back to Billings for it, along with the first replacement 196 (I'd say original, but the original block brought to me was scrap and wasn't a virgin either) so the distributor, timing cover, oil pan, flywheel, clutch and so forth can be swapped over, along with a second block heater to install in the new engine.

Eventually I'll figure out what went wrong with the 196 build, but I can't do that on Tony's timeline. My best guess is the camshaft was cut wrong, but I can't confirm until I get the cam card from the cam grinder and get the engine back to do some more post mortem. This was my first time using a reground cam from this vendor. I've had no problems with my Isky cams in the past, but no one makes a new camshaft for the 196. The camshaft is the only thing I can't vouch for at this point. I should have gone with BCB or IH Only North for the regrind, but this cam grinder shaved a week off the project back in November when I heard time was critical.

Meanwhile, the best I can do is buy another core and pay to have it rebuilt by someone else to speed this process along.

My apologies for disappointing, Tony, but I hope a shiny third 196 with a warranty makes up for it.
