Default Removing steering column 1953 IHC 100 truck

Can anyone tell me how the steering shaft is attached to the steering box? Spine with a pin? I have loosened the band that squeezes the shaft around the input to the steering box, but I am having a hell of a time making it move. Thanks, Mark

Release clamp and pull it out. I don't recall a pin.

Mine are part of the box.
The input shaft of the box runs all the way to the steering wheel.
Look and see if there is a horn wire that runs all the way to the box.

I have to remove my wheel and then unbolt the box and slide the entire thing out.

You can upgrade the box and save the column by using something like the "column saver".
Several company's make them but you have to find the right size.
There is also a horn saver to let you use the factory button.

You just cut the column and shaft in the engine compartment and then add a ujoint and a double D shaft to the new box.

Here's one example.

The trick is finding the right sizes.
Mine measures 7/8 shaft and 1.5 OD column tube.

Is it a Ross box?

Its not the Ross box I am familiar with from the scouts. It is smaller.

I will try again to persuade it to come out before I do something as drastic as cutting it.

Thanks for the input, guys.

As Bill stated above:

The steering shaft could be one piece -- running from inside the steering box (includes the "worm" gear) to the steering wheel.

If it's a Ross box you can pull the steering shaft out by removing the side cover from the box and then pushing the sector shaft through until the cams disengage from the worm gear. You won't be able to get the shaft out until the steering tube/column is off the box, though, and IIRC you have to take the collar off the box, too. That's the piece that the steering tube clamps on to.

If you can't get the steering tube to move, it might be because the clamp underneath the dash is still tight or it's stuck where it passes throught the firewall.
