Default Axle swap AAM 14 10.5''

Well before I left to go back overseas, my 14 bolt ff under my travelette started blowing oil out of it. So time for a rebuild. Now I have been looking at the AAM 10.5'' ff used under some of the GM HD trucks. Its the same basic old 14 bolt but it has disc brakes with an ebrake!

I will look at one when I get home in Aug. to see how wide and get the measurements. But I can get it for around $300-400 bucks complete. Since it will have 3.73's or 4.10's and mine is 4.56's I plan to do bearings and gear in it. Move the spring perches and shock mounts etc etc..

My setup I have now are 4.56 gears and aren't really to bad I like them with 35's. But I was thinking about trying the 4.10 that come in the donor axle (if it works out swap wise) and see how they do.
Now I have a Detroit that is in the current 14 bolt will swap over to the newer axle but its for the 4.56's. Which I would like to keep but my just end up getting a some type of locker for the 4.10's in it if I like them. Obviously if I went 4.10's I would need new front gears. But I was going to add a locker up front as well so I have to tear into it any way.

Really can't decide on the ratio or actually to rebuild the old 14 bolt I have and just run it with the drums. Basically it will be the same price wise for a disc brake swap, with ebrake, on the old vs buying the newer axle which will have a better ebrake setup.

So 4.56's or 4.10's?

And a newer AAM 14 bolt w/disc's or old drum brake 14 bolt ff??

Only bad thing is I can't use my Detroit locker with the 4.10's and I would have to re-gear the front.

I am going to look hard at the AAM 10.5 when I get home. If I do the swap I will drive it with the 4.10's and see how I like it. But might end up going with the 4.56's as that's what the Detroit lock I have fits unless it pooped out as well.

I could be wrong but I think the split is 4:10 for gears, if not you could use thick gears and use the same carrier.

Has Bobby filled you in on his 68 truck yet

Yeah can get thick gears. But I would just reuse the 4.10's that come with it. If I buy gears I will just get 4.56's.

I will let you know how the axles are if they are good for swaps! Be really good for disc's and decent e-brakes. I really want to do a hydro boost set up at that time as well. Thinking about just getting it out of the same truck I get the axle out of.

But I have not heard form Bobby he sent me an email when he got it. But he should be back at work any day I can't wait to hear about it!!!

You might want to reconsider a locker in the front axle. In loose sand, gravel, snow, ice; the front locker is hard if not impossible to turn. The darn truck just plows straight ahead. The best is an ARB locker that can be switched on or off from the cab. Switch on when needed; switch off in the slippery stuff. Cheaper is a lock right set up loose.

Planned on a Elocker. Electric locker up front but may not do it.

Also I cleaned and installed new Amsoil in the rear 14bolt and so far so good! May have been just crappy cheap oil in it boiling
