It has been quiet recently about this build. When is it expected in PA Tony? Eric and I will be passing through Williamsport next Friday on the way to Macungie and the truck show. Are you still planning on taking this Scout to Nats? Stan

Stan and all following this thread, I just spoke with Tom Mandera. Apperantly the wrong piston rod bearings were used on the motor. I have never been able to get the motor to run correctly, Gary and I spent several hours trying to get it to smooth out after the cam bearings were broken in. I could never get to motor to run with out advancing the timing by about 15ADC. I had spoken with Tom about this and had planned on dropping the Scout in Helena, but when I spoke with Tom this morning he told me the motor needs to come back out. SO I will pull it here because the Scout is very nice and I do not want to put the damage possibality on Tom. My shop is better equipped to do this kind of work on a purtty Scout. Once again this Scout has bittin me in the butt. I have to get a few things out of the way but will give my best effort to getting the motor to Tom before the Just Int show.
Tony I am sorry for the delay, I will get this rapped up as soon as I can. I would gladly hook you up with a loaner if you were closer.

Well I have my Scout (bicycle) to use in good weather … but I will have to rent a wreck for a month or so. It is what it is. My daughter needs her cute Subaru Baja back for school. I wish I was closer … not to be able to get a loner (would love to be able to borrow Leona’s go cart to get around in) … but to be able to help with pulling the engine and to help finish the project. Robert did not mention that he fixed the steering wheel situation … (I am already down 5 pounds - maybe I should go on a hunger strike until the Scout makes it back East). What do you think … 75 lbs lighter riding around in a Scout with the top and doors off with the windshield folded down … think I would get lucky (probably not … at least the truck will look cool).
Robert, I owe you a phone call … currently I have been busy fixing a sinking toilet syndrome (thought I only needed a new wax seal). Bathroom plumbing and floor is now fixed. Don’t worry about getting the Scout fixed for Nationals. I found out today that I might be going to Tampa for the Republican National Convention as a delegate after all. Someone backed out … I am next in line in the whole State of PA (although our County Chairman - who came in last in our County and District - might be appointed instead … big old boys club at work). I would love to see pictures of the steering wheel fix. Did you get the brackets for the sun visors? Do we now have time to get the reworked non- Scout fold windshield dash to work better with the fold down window? Gary, thanks for your offer of help … sure miss the IH Montana crew. |

I haven't spent 15 minutes in my shop in the last month or two thanks to work.. but after waiting for the engine to arrive (the scheduled 7am-before-work delivery was delayed to noon) last week I managed to check a few critical items and get the crank to the machine shop again.
Robert was concerned the timing was off, but the marks line up. ![]() That doesn't mean the cam wasn't ground "off" so I will degree it when I can get back to it - that requires the crank, though. This, however, is why the engine had to come back out. ![]() ![]() ![]() John Fleck of BCB happened to call to chat about something or other, and off-hand mentioned a 196 he had just built and had to tear back down because he had been sold the wrong rod bearings and wiped out the rod bearings in about 8 minutes. A little more research and you'll find "everywhere" that says the V8 and 4cyl rod bearings are the same. I believed it. Turns out, they are not. The V8 and 4cyl connecting rods are also different. On the V8, two rods sit on one journal and oil squirts out between the rods. On the 4cyl, the rod sits right up against the crank journal on both sides, and it's hard to get the oil out. So the oil gets hot, the oil break down, the bearing fails, and you get a knock. It was important to fix this before it gets to PA! You can see the scoring in the bearings and crank from the short time Robert was running the engine. This picture shows the oil relief hole in the rod.. ![]() John informed me that the he was told the correct rod bearings were obsolete and unavailable, though they can be found. He was working on getting a cache of them on hand. Meanwhile, I started scouring for some before the engine even arrived, knowing I was going to need them and needed to fast track getting this back together. I found some in Puerto Rico. Obviously, these are NOS.. these are dated 1981. ![]() You can see the oil relief hole. I bought the 010 size because I was afraid I might need to source another crank, and again, I was looking to shave some time off of this. It's likely the crank can just be polished and re-used as-is. I have a set of 020 bearings (from 1984) along with some 040 just in case. My oldest daughter and I dropped the crank off on Friday, and while the crank grinder was out of town over the weekend, he was supposed to get the crank today or tomorrow. Once the crank is polished, I can put it back in, and then check the cam timing to see if it was ground "off" or not - if so, I can adjust the cam timing by offsetting the timing marks on the gears and "fix" it. -Tom
