I recently received an owner's handbook for my 1969 1500D and in comparing it to the 1972 version, I noticed it did not include instructions and shift patterns regarding the five speed transmissions -- only four speeds. Were the five speeds not an option in 1969? Just curious... Patrick Cherry Ojai,CA

As far as I know, the 5-speeds were available in all years of the 'D' series.
1969 was the first model year for the 'D' series, so possibly the 5-speed info was inadvertantly omitted when IH produced the new operator manuals.

Scott,
I think that's it. As I compare the two handbooks I noticed the 1972 versions has more thorough and detailed descriptions of every aspect of the truck, even things as mundane as heater controls and mirror adjustments. Like most fine literature, each edition gets better. Cheers, Patrick Cherry Ojai, CA
