Default Re: engine swapping

rebuild the 304 with a mild cam, good valve job and port work, efi. then add in a shift kit for auto trans and you'll have all the seat of the pants feel you need. i can tell you after working on a scout that was a one owner truck i put elion it and a few other small mods including some workon how it shifts. and the owner was suprized how much it "woke up" the truck.
an engine swap is not imposible or a major build. but there some issues to adress. and any junk yard motor will need some work. so for the amount of down time fab work and money spent i would just go with the 304. now if you get a chance to buy a newly rebuilt engine or are awsome at fab work ect. it may be easier to do a swap idk.
most people are just looking for more pep as you stated and think a bigger motor will get it. but as stated the way these motors work thats not always the case. there are small power gains to be made with some motor work durring the rebuild. efi will get you better throttle response and you will be able to tune it for your driving style and area. so it is in perfect tune. as for seat of the pants feel that has nothing to do with your motor. thats all gears and transmission.

I am obviously not worried about fuel mileage. the scout is my toy. Here is my thoughts. I am wanting to put my new engine on a stand, rebuild it for more power and drop it in one weekend into my toy.

I have always loved more power. I am wanting f.i. and hei ignition. my 304 is a decent motor but after it sat for a decade the engine has some blow by and such.

I appreciate all of your comments fellas. thanks
