Today was the first day I've had time to even look at the Scout in the last week, and I made it count. Filled it with water and ran it to make sure no leakies, after it all checked out I drained it and flushed it and put in antifreeze and water mix. I had to tweak the radiator shroud a little bit (not hard, small hammer on the top mount angle did it) to stop an annoying 'screee screee screee' noise from the fan blade hitting the bottom of the shroud. But I'm not happy, it's seems to be awful noisy to me; I've run fixed fans before (got one on my 79 due to not wanting to cool well) and none of them are as noisy as this one. I deliberately picked a five blade fan with staggered offset blades over a six blade with equal spacing assuming the offset distances would make it quieter; I don't know if it has a bent blade or what, but it's everything but quiet. Tomorrow is an early day to head to work also, but I should have time to yank that fan off and try a clutch fan. Once I'm happy with that, it's AC time (finally!). I'd like to lay the groundwork this week, get some of the basic stuff done, so I can finish it up this weekend. Since I'm running a little slow (ok, a lot slow) on what is basically just a light tweak of a running Scout, I took next week off to ensure it's done before Friday when it's time to pull out for the Midwest Classic.
By the way, with the radiator in, straight water, and all the air purged out, it was running 179.4 degrees at the thermostat outlet. I assume it has a 180 degree radiator in it, so I guess the thermostat is working like it should, and the radiator isn't having any problems keeping it cool, it probably idled for over an hour.

Glad to see we are both getting something done! Towed a really heavy boat for a friend with the wife's Scout yesterday. With the dissy conversion and the new exhaust it pulled real nice I'm impressed, it pulled like it had 345 in it.

Nothing wrong with a 304, I for one wouldn't make the effort to swap a good 304 for a 345 just so I could say I have a 345. Pretty much anything you can or should tow with a Scout, the 304 will drag just fine, and get a little better mileage while it does it. I would bet that most people would not know the difference seat of the pants between a 304 and a 345 by driving a Scout. Now if we're talking 305 Chevy to 350 Chevy, that's pretty obvious, but since the IH engines are both lower RPM torque engines, they feel pretty much the same to me.

Well, I got the fan swapped out today.....not the most fun job in the world, especially when you have a nice new aluminum radiator right there in striking distance if you drop or lose your grip on the fan
But I managed to not fix it til it was broke, got everything buttoned up and I like the way this thermo clutch fan fits even better. However, it didn't do squat to get rid of my noise I was not a happy camper; I figured water pump bearing, oh great, I get to repeat what I just went through with light fingering that heavy fan around a shiny new radiator that just screams 'gouge me!'. Got out the stethoscope, and the water pump sounded pretty normal, no grinding noises that I could hear, just the normal whirring....so then I got on the alternator. OH YEAH, there it is, evidently there is a bearing going out on the alternator because that is where the noise is coming from, when I put the tip of the steth on it it about put out my eardrums. All in all not too unhappy about that, it's not like I don't have another alternator laying around (even a couple of the newer CS models, although I don't know if I want to use the time to convert over right now) and I'm glad I'm getting that done before the AC compressor and hoses are on, this makes it much easier. So manana, that's probably where I'll be, putting on a different alternator. Looks like this one might be the original, if so, it gave pretty good service!

Heck while Dennis is chasing down mystery bearings, I have been frantically cleaning out the lead end of the driveway. Since you visited Dennis, and dropped off the Terra, I have been working to clean up my working area so I can get started on three of my on going projects. The Terra, the T'ette, and Scout II(the Cherokee). I am going to reposition the wood pile from the Oak tree cut down, and then I will have a lot more space to work with/in. I pretty much have the 4160 rebuilt, then I get to put it back on, and set it up correctly. And if it doesn't go all that well, I have another source for another ready to go 4160, that I can just slap in there and roll with. About 6 trash cans worth of collected stuff that is useless so the Sanitation Engineer gets to have his own hernia putting that in his truck. Pictures to follow shortly, and then you can attest to what's been done since you dropped the Terra off at the end of March.

That would get better results if you were here saying it with a wrench in your hand and ready to get dirty

Jeff, I only have two projects (well, two Scouts anyway) and I can't keep up with that, no way could I divide between three projects and accomplish anything noticeable on any of them. I need the positive reinforcement to keep moving, seeing progress is what fires me up, doing three things at once you never really can do that....wish I was able to juggle three and get stuff done, but that ain't the way I'm wired I guess.

Well, if you were a tad bit closer and all, I would, cause I might be alot of things, but a 'fraidy cat I am not

Donna and I have been following your progress here, and she equates it to an adoption with visiting rights

Hope the cold air is blowing when you read this.

Nope, the only cold air blowing is outside at night right now. I got sidetracked (gee, that never happens!) with a kitchen sink that decided to back up and that was impervious to the meanest nastiest commercial drain opener I could find, so that was about a two morning ordeal (still had to work afternoons) getting it working and up to snuff. But the good news is that I have the weekend off, and I took next week off specifically to work on the Scout and 'get er done'. I've shortened the list of stuff to 'has to get done' from 'want to do' and that helps, and I may even get time for some of the 'want to do' stuff. I will guarantee you that when there is cold air to be had, there will be photos of the nice new Sanden compressor sitting in back of the nice new aluminum radiator that I will post on here so you can 'oooh' and 'ahhhh' over them. Right now I'm going out in the trailer and do some digging for an alternator and for some top bows for Jed on the Tech Forum........

Finally made what seems like some decent progress! The driver's side door doesn't latch all the way; I thought first that it was just a striker adjustment, but it turns out the latch itself is worn out. Luckily I had a couple here, so I spent the first hour or so this morning using the impact driver on rusted bolts and pulling the latch out of a junk door. Supposed to rain early in the week, and I wanted to have what I needed in the shop so I wouldn't have to mess around outside in the rain.

I then opened up the semi trailer and found a Delco CS130 alternator. Since I yanked it off of my daughter's old 90 LeSabre that lunched the transmission, I know it's good. I debated going for the swap from the SI type alternator, but did it anyway, I figured it'll be easier to do it once and do it right and not have to revisit it later. Upon yanking the old alternator, it took about two seconds to spin it by hand and say 'yup, that's where the noise was coming from!'. Really evident that it has a bad bearing when you hand spin it, you can feel it grinding, so I'm glad I caught that one. The CS went in pretty easy because it had two 'blank' holes, so I was able to use the original long bolt on top and a shorter bolt and nut on the bottom rather than having to get a metric bolt to thread into the alternator itself. The only fly in the ointment is the wiring connector; I specifically chopped off the connector when I sent the Buick for scrap, figuring I'd need it. Right on the needing it, wrong on being able to use it. The 90 was apparently set up to use the 'F' terminal as a sense feed from the computer, rather than using the large 'S' wire that most of the CS's use. And the connector has no provision for the S wire. No problem, I'll grab one at Autozone....not, and not at Advance either. They've both got the SI connectors, but nothing for the CS, so I'll have to wait for Monday and hit the local NAPA or Carquest (or whatever it is this week) and get one. Other than that, alternator is in and ready to rock.

I then got onto installing the Mallory Multi spark box and Ford E-coil. Some creative wiring and paying attention to connectors, and if the Mallory dies I can rewire, with a ballast resistor before the E-coil so I don't fry my Gold Box, and be back on the road in about five minutes, all using quick connects. Fires up and runs nice now, even cold it'll idle right down to slow idle (about 650) without dying. Love it!

Tomorrow it's time to troubleshoot the horn (no juice at the relay, gotta review my wiring diagram in the service manual and track it down) then start getting the AC in. It's moving along now though, I'm feeling better about it and I want to start driving it some before we leave Friday to catch any bugs I'm missing. The 'gotta do's' that I have left are; service rear wheel bearings (they're the old style, lubed with grease and not gear lube like the later Scouts), install radio and speakers (got to have tunes), install 'new' door latch mechanism (won't be bad now that I know how it goes in and comes out), install seat covers, and if I have time install the headliner. Oh, new tires too, but that kind of goes along with the wheel bearings. No pics today, I didn't loom any of the wires yet or organize them at all since the AC system will be going in. Figured I'd wait til I got it all run and then loom and zip tie as appropriate.....
