Default Ignition key tumbler problem

Hi, this is my first post and I need some advise:
I recently bought a 75 scout and I have been sorting out bits and pieces as time has permitted.
Since I bought the scout I have always been able to start the truck with or without a key inserted. It has never locked the steering in any spot. I ordered a matched set of keys and today I finally got around to take the old ignition lock tumbler out with great advise from the forum on the removal portion. I did not have to drill a hole as I could stick in a small screw driver in a small slot under the turn signal mechanism once it was removed.

Put the new tumbler in and now I could not remove the key at all as it never allowed me to turn the key enough counter clockwise to get to the "remove key position" I also do not have the wheel lock rod, ever travelling up far enough to lock into the steering plate.

Looking closer on the old key it says "made for GM" on it. The end of teh two tumblers look different from one another, but they bot slide in and lock into the column.

It is a non tilt column. Any ideas what I'm facing? I could really use some help
thnx,
Hakan in Long Beach

Be sure the little plastic gear at the back of the ignition is in the right position, you can use a small screwdriver to "jump" teeth to get it to the right position. Also, make sure the "sleeve" at the inside of the cyl. is not loose, you can use a punch to lock it on so that it doesn't slip off the end. I had to use that part of my old cyl. on the end of the GM one to get it to work. If the old cyl allowed you to turn the key too far then that little plastic gear that actuates ignition will definetly be out of position. I had to play with mine for a little while to get the gear right and the tension spring that holds the cyl in place to lock. In retrospect I should have just ordered the kit from IHONLY with matching door and ignition key

Hi, Thank you,

I forgot one detail in first post, as I always could take out the key in all positions or start truck without the key I'm now not sure if the old key / tumbler ever turned back to the "off position" I'm saying this as the rod mechanism seem to go up and down, but never gets out of the pipe sleeve in column to lock the steering wheel before or after I attempted to install my IH only matched set.

When I installed my fathers new ignition, the key did the same to him because it was so tight. A little finesse and it came out and loosened up over time. This may not be your problem but it's worth a try if everything else seems O.K., as long as the whole cyl. doesn't come out with it. That says that your tension locker thingy isn't snapping in. BTW my steering lock never worked the same after I replaced mine....didn't bother messing with it though.

It could be yourignition switch(electrical on the colum below the dash)is out of adjustment and not letting the rod come up far enough.

Jeff, can you explain this further. I adjusted the ignition switch up and down, but this did not make any difference, rod still does not come up. Does this have to do with the gear behind the tumler? If so, how do I change this around?

Should the outdated storage container permitted someone to change the key too much after that that tiny plastic gear that actuates ignition will definitely possibly be outside of placement.

Im assuming english is not his first language. I cant really make much sense of what he is trying to say though. I dont really fault people for that though,he was obviously trying to help. I took Japanese as an undergrad and I cant really speak it,other than asking for the time, and the one phrase I made sure to memorize, which translates as "I am a citizen of the United States,I wish to speak with a representative from the United States embassy". Thats the one phrase you should know in the local language of any country you go to. (If that phrase is likely to get you killed, you should reconsider going there)
