The 345 engine with the new 'timing chain' sounds like a real deal if the chain is the newer style for the larger teeth on the drive gear!! The small teeth have been known to slip on occassion.

For the uninitiated, IH V8s have timing gears, not a timing chain!

I just had a block machined in Sacramento/ Carmichael by Performance Engines. ( I know location can make a difference) I thougth the rates were good. A knowlegable machinest can ber worth a couple hundred extra dollars in my opinion. Rich the owner was very knowlegable. This shop advertises on Craigs list for the following rates.

$450, block prep, bore, deck, hone, cam bearing install

$200 performance balance rotating assembly

$10 a rod to resized/ clean rods

$90 media blast block

$40 per head to resurface

$150 per head for valve job

$35 a journal to regrind crank

Thanks everyone. I got alot of oppions. I want to do the whole engine when I pull the heads to freashin them up, but I have a guestion. On the driverside back exsust I have a grove like a channel cut around the manifold, ill try to post a pic of it shortly. It doesnt leak but looks odd to me.

I have a new ( Rebuilt) 345 bored .040 over with all rebuilt heads,valves,pistons,bearings,etc etc and with all new parts. - starter,alternator,water pump, hoses,bolts,carb,motor mounts,belts all new baked,polishedand cleaned and im sitting in close to 4K by the time its is all said and done.
