I tried to do this today... F A I L.. :

I cannot figure out how to release the tension on the front spring enough to drop it down so I can get the bolt through the new 4" shackle

I jack the body up, the played with axle height?.. Just can't seem to get it. Some detail I'm missing.

Jack the truck up until you get full droop on the axles, put jackstands under the frame. You now have the axles off of the ground and all the tension off of the springs. Take the jack or better yet two and just barley apply pressure to the axle. Unbolt the shackles and use the jacks and a BFH to coax the grade 5 bolts out. If you do not have new hardware then make sure you put the nut on the end of the bolt and use a little finesse with the BFH.

I thought that's what I did. I was very confident going in, but then when the body was up and supported, I used a jack get the tension ( I thought) off the spring. I removed the old shackle fine. But when I did finally remove the top bolt, the spring snugged up toward the body, never got it back down again. Hmmm?

Your tires are on the ground, you need to jack the scoout up into the air by the frame, like you are jacking it up to leave the axle on the groundOnce you get it high enough the spring will come away from the frame.

sorry Jeff!! (and thanks for responding).. most of you guys on here forgot more today about Scouts than I'll ever know. I should've explained the pic. It's an aftermath-picture.

I had it jacked up in my garage - by the body, tires prob 3-4" off the ground.. then I put a floor jack under the axle like i had read in previous posts.. But no matter what i did from that point on.. the spring just never budged from where it is still in the (pic) !? #%*#!!

** I was drinking but still.. I dont understand what im missing.

Now it's parked sadly out front with one partial shackle hanging from the spring because I am a tard! I will try again tomorrow

..and I was going to try to do the leaky fuel lines myself next..?? yikes..

If your trying to do one side at a time it don't work.
You need to raise the front evenly so both sides release pressure or you will have a twist in the suspension.
