Default Auto shifter boot heat

I have a 1973 IH Scout II with a 727 auto transmission. I was wondering if anyone else gets a lot of heat that comes up the shifter? My shifter has a leather boot on it but it has a pretty good gap at the top of it.

Am I possibly missing a piece under the boot? Does anyone else have this problem? What did you do to fix?

Best solution is to get the correct boot. Scouts didn't come with leather shifter boots on the automatic, they were rubber; my guess is the leather one is a 'universal' that somebody bought at Autozone and made it fit. It may not match the hole in the tunnel cover, that will allow in a lot of heat. The Light Line vendors on here (SSS, IHON, IHO, etc) all have the stock boots available.

Thanks Dennis! That would explain why it's letting so much heat up through the shifter.

The correct boot and parts are very important. Not only to keep the heat away, also to keep out noxious fumes like CO which can kill in a closed vehicle. Because of the intense heat, the rubber dries out and cracks after a few years.

Another solution I emplyed to bring the temp down around the transmission hump and expecially the transmission cover plate (you could cook on it in the summer) was to line the underside of the hump with peel and stick with a layer of radient barrier glued to it. I also applied the same layers to the underside of the plate itself as it is just a piece of metal with no insulation. This keeps the temp down to warm to the hand and helps considerably with the in cab temps. It also reduces noise. Peel and stick (Lowes roofing section) is basically the same product as a dyno-mat but a hell of a lot cheaper. I've used the same process of the back bed and the hard top under the liner, as well as in the doors and the noise reduction coupled with the heat reduction are unbelievable. I have never had an issue with the butyl base running and I live in Houston (last year we had temps well above 100* for months on end along with the rainfall of the Sahara desert). Hope this helps some.
