Default 4spd in an 800...Info?

Hey fellas, I have a 68 800 with a Ford 302ci, T-90 3 spd and d20 twin stick T-case. I'm looking at upgrading to a 4 spd, but I need some info from my fellow IHers. The 302 swap was done in the early 80's before my grandfather purchased the rig, so I'm not sure if an adapter was used or maybe a ford bronco bell housing to the stock t-90. I have the engine out if a pic would help determine what I have. So here are some key questions.

-If I am running an IH t-90 Trans, can I assume a newer 4spd will carry the same bell housing pattern to bold to the 302? or If I am running a bell housing adapter.... would said adapter bold to a 4spd IH trans?

-What Trans are most people using as an upgrade?

-What year vehicle/Trans should I be looking for?

-Will my D20 bolt to a newer 4spd

Thanks,

HEY! I was born in Pueblo!
Okay, I think I have some good news for you...
Since you have a Ford motor I think it's safe for me to assume, and please realize that's all I am doing here in regards to compatibility, that you can get a Borg-Warner T-18 to bolt up. 70% of the time I'm right 100% of the time.
I've read a good bit on the T-18's recently because my Scout is about to get a T90 to T18 swap. According to the information I found, Ford's variation of T18 is the most common and the most consistent throughout the years. Meaning, different year models were compatible with each other, unlike Jeep and IH versions, which had various output shaft lengths, spline counts, bell housings, etc. In fact, it's hard to find anyone in the off-road aftermarket that will work on a T-18 unless it's a Ford. Additionally, your D-20 transfer should bolt right up assuming the transmission you use came from a 4wd vehicle. The Scout 800 T-18 transmission we just got for my Scout came stock with a D-20.
Again, not entirely certain about your specific application but maybe you could even get a T-19 to work just as easy... More options in the T-19 but the primary difference in my mind is a synchro'ed first gear as the T-18's first gear works the same as a T-90, you gotta stop.
HTH. Let us know what you figure out and don't worry, most of us won't hold a grudge over your allowing a Ford motor to move IH steel.
A great source for info can be found at the following link:

A word of caution, if you contact Novak about T-18 or 19's don't begin by saying you have an IH Scout. That tends to aggravate them for some dumb reason. They will quickly tell you they only deal in FORD T-18's for Jeep conversions.
Might lead with you engine model instead.

If at all possible, I would suggest you try to determine what year your block was manufactured and what vehicle it came from. That could really help you figure out what your options are. Perhaps it had a T-18 to begin with...

Thanks for the help Radar. You were born in Pueblo....LOL what are the chances. Pueblo is my home town, but I took off after graduation to Colorado Springs and Denver for the last 12 yrs, I just moved back about 6 mos ago with my family. We wanted our daughter to be near grandparents. Kinda strange being back home after so long.

I will start doing some research on the t18 & t19s to see what I can do. Its funny that you replied, because I had just read on KB's build thread that he found your trans & t-case on Ebay for a decent price. Good Find.

I hope I get some slack since the swap was literally before I was born. lol Also I figured after sitting for 15 yrs I would concentrate on some drive-ability issues. I just started my project about a week ago. Ordered some custom Alcan springs, SOA, Scout ll D44's, PWrSteering, ect. I thinking of starting a build thread here soon.
