Default How do I fix a cracked starter mount?

Hey guys,

I've been lurking around here for a long time and I finally have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to.

I felt like an idiot when I did it, but I cracked the transmission side of the starter mount on a 392ic that I'm rebuilding. Is this a JB Weld fix or does it need to be brazed?

Has anyone had any experience with this product http://www.castaloy.com/ ?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Cooper

Looks like there's enough to hold the dowel, the bolt hole should go all the way threw to the front?, if you want to weld it stick weld it with Nickle rod.

starter doesnt mount there, thats for the trans.
no big deal..
5 other bolts hold the trans in place.
becareful in the future ,ok?
me i'd drill all the way thru it, and stuff a bolt and use a nut on backside.
you could weld it all up and redrill and tap it, good luck with getting that perfect alignment..

Since 3/4 of the way around of the portion that holds the dowel is intact just put the dowel in and run it with 5 but do not leave the dowel out.

jb weld is worthless for this.
If you were to braze or weld it you would have to grind a groove to fill up with braze or nickel rod.

The idea of a thru bolt is a good one.

In the past, cast iron was always difficult to repair: heat the part slowly in an oven, make the weld with a nickel rod, slowly cool the part in an oven--and hope the cast iron would not recrack (it frequently did). Most welders wouldnt even attempt to weld cast iron due to the temperamental nature of such repairs. Fortunately, times have changed. Muggy Weld offers two solutions for cast iron repair: arc electrodes and gas torch rods.

How are our electrodes different? First, the elongation is up to 300% higher than nickel-type electrodes for cast iron--which allows the weld to stretch and absorb weld contraction (and prevents cracking for the base metal AND the weld). Second, the metallurgic makeup of our rods are softer than nickel rod. Ni rod cools and forms a hard spot in the cast iron, which is a magnet for cracks--(envision a glass window with a rock cooled into the center). Third, our rods are highly machinable, which is atypical of most cast iron electrodes.

The combination of crack resistance and machineability make Muggy Weld electrodes the rods of choice for cast iron welding.

For torch welders, we offer our 56% silver solder for cast iron repair. While we prefer our arc electrodes, this high strength alloy is suitable for thin castings, exhaust manifolds, and small cast iron cracks.

Thanks for all the replies! Sounds like it's not that big of a deal. I like the thru bolt if it doesn't interfere with mounting the starter. I'll have to take a closer look.
