Default 1979 Scout II rebuild

Well after some hunting I finally found my first Scout, Me and my uncle went in on it together, I paid half and he paid half. It's a 1979 Scout II 304, 727, I think it has the Dana 20 t-case??, Dana 44's with 3.07 gears, Rallye Package, all original, and we bought it from the original owner only has 121,051 miles on it. When we went out to look at it it had been sitting for 3 years because the gas in the tank had turned, the original owner had taken the tank out to get it cleaned, and put on a rebuilt carburetor from Napa but then had a heart attack and had to have triple bypass and couldn't fix it so he had to sell it as they were moving to a place where it was easier for him and his wife to live. It wound up my uncle and me had to put in a new fuel pump, new sending unit, new gas lines. We primed the carburetor yesterday, pumped the throttle twice and held it to the floor, it started and the oil pressure was low and it looked like a smoker going full blast, it was coming out of the exhaust and off of the 304. After about 20 minutes of idling the smoke wasn't so heavy out of the exhaust so we pulled it out of the front yard and onto the driveway let it sit a little more the pressure came up, and the smoke disappeared! I backed it out of the driveway and it shifted smooth as butter from Park to Reverse and then Reverse to Drive and back to Park. Wasn't able to take any pictures but I will next time I am out there. And lookout for the restore thread for his 1979 Midas Traveler.

Default Re: 1979 Scout II rebuild

Here is what we plan to do with it, cut out all of the rust issues(the majority of the problem) and I'll be welding in the new sheet metal this will probably be one place at a time and as money allows because we still have to get the Traveler running again. When we towed in home on the dolly we hit a bump and the dolly hit the driverside bottom of the door put a tiny dent and scraped some paint nothing bad just gotta take off the door panel and take a body hammer and pop the dent, every place that gets new metal will probably get some POR-15 treatment, we have to replace either the rear tailgate window or the whole top tailgate. Got a call from my uncle, he ran it around town at about 35-40 mph and it performed well, still got to replace the rear shocks so that will happen when I can make it out there and replace the Dist cap and rotor and the Plug wires.
