Default Front Sump Oil Pan Swap to a Rear Sump

I'm getting ready to start my latest project. It is a 71 800B that originaly came with a 304 V8, B/W Auto tranny, and D44 rear axle. The engine was out when I purchased the truck, but no problem as I have two spare 345's. The one I'm using came out of a Travelall, so has the front sump Pan.

I'm told I need to use a rear sump for axle clearance. Thought I'd document the swap for others that might be interested.

Here is the original front sump pan installed:

I removed the pan easy enough. Pictured is the old pump and pickup tube.

The oil pump will need to be swapped out as well as the pickup tube. Unbolt the old pump, bolt in the new pump. Make sure the pump drive shaft aligns up, and the pump will seat properly. Also make sure the O-ring is installed where the pickup tube connects into the pump housing.

The new pickup tube needs to connect to the main bearing cap bolt pictured. You will need the special bolt I'm holding to secure the support arm.

Here it is all bolted in: New pan gasket in place also.

Then install a new pan gasket, and bolt on the double sump pan.

Then there is the matter of the new dipstick. It will mount to the exhaust manifold bolt for support.

The original dipstick? Well, I may leave it alone, or cut it down and plug it. Not sure yet...

The sticker on the valve cover lists the build date as Aug. 1972 for this engine. The 2 could be a 7, not positive. Can anyone tell the date by looking at the photo?

Enjoy!

That is one of the reasons I dont own a Scout. I know that oil pumps dont fail that often, I like the idea that I can still get them new from the store (front sump stye) is why I drive a full sized with a front sump pan.

If any G.C.B. club member needs it, it is yours! With the pump of course.

Aren't they rebuildable?

It you unbolt the dip stick tube you should be able to wiggle the old tube out. The stock set up was a sold aluminum plug but you should be able to find a small cup plug that fits.

Based on the fuel pump and the fact that there were no travelall's in 1977 im pretty sure the motor would be 1972.

Good luck

Yes, thanks. I'll call it a 72 then. That's good because the 800B is a 71 so it is a good fit age wise.
