Default 1977 IH Traveler/ Air Conditioner

Has anyone installed an air conditioner in an 1977 IH Traveler, just bought one but it has no AC and I would like to add that but not sure of what I might be getting into.

Anyone with experience in this I would sure like to know if a "shadetree mechanic" could install one ok or if I should should just leave it alone????

Thanks,

Gary

Arizona Mobile Air has a kit for the Scout II/Traveller/Terra... I have heard that the kit is good and not too difficult to install. Others have put Vintage Air units in their Scouts, do a search here, there might be a write up or two to find.

Would it be difficult to swap the neccessary parts from a junkyard scout into a running scout? Sure, some things like hoses and such would probably need replacing, but for the most part the swap would be pretty straightforward, right?

As far as using "junkyard parts" your dealing with atleast 30 year old hoses condensors and verything else. Also all of these systems were design for R-12 which IF you can find it is very expensive.

You are way ahead if you go with a new set up from vintage air or one of the other vendors

Here is my $.02

I do not know Scouts that well as I am a full size guy. However, I did put factory air in my 74 pickup using "junk yard parts". Everything was bolt in, and I only had to drill three holes as the truck did not leave the factory with AC. One was for the drain on the unit and the other two were for the high and low side to the compressor. I did have to get the part of the wiring harness that operated the blower from the donor truck, but since the circuts were numbered it was no drama. It was retrofitted to R134a using a sanden compressor that I bought off Ebay. I also sourced a "sanden to yorx" compressor bracket, google that and you will find numerous sources. I had the lines made up locally.

It might be easier to get a kit, but if you can source it is not that big of a deal. It is probably alot cheaper as well.

Here is a part list:

1) Condenser

2) Unit

3) Electrical control loom from donor truck

4) Stock AC bracket from donor motor

5) Sanden to York adapter

6) Sanden compressor (I paid $105 for a rebuilt to my door)

7) Dryer

8) High and Low lines (made locally)

Hope that helps somebody.

Go with the largest Condencer you can fit. It makes a world of difference with R134A.

J.J. did you replace the thermal expansion valve in the unit when you did this ? Also did you have to change any o-rings in the unit with a special type ? I currently have the stock a/c set-up with a leak behind the clutch. The york compressors have always been so noisy and rough . I've been told that the Sanden is much smoother. Where did you order your sanden compressor ? Thanks

The expansion valve was not replaced. The O rings were replaced as was the drier with
R134a compliant pieces. You are right, the stock units are noisy and rough. I know that on D trucks IH ran a brace from the bracket to the top of the motor. I found my Sanden on Fleabay.

If you need a comp. and clutch go with the Sanden. IH Only north makes a very nice bracket. Pre-Welded so the belt will line up.

Since no OEM uses the York style comps. any more the have gotten very $$$ compared to a Sanden and clutch.
