I filled up the tank today to full, drove around all morning and when I got home, noticed gas was dripping out of the bottom of the vapor canister. It hasn't done this so far and I have made three or four trips to the station. I have read a lot today. Do I need a new vapor canister or is it a factor of the heat and perhaps the float being set wrong? I am going to buy a new gas cap first to see if that helps. Any ideas? Thanks |

depends where its leaking from..............
is it a cracked hose nipple on the plastic vapor condensor? is it from a leaking hose.? gas o leen when it is agitated or heated up releases vapor . . way more than gas that hasnt been shaken or heated. when gas is heated it expands, and all of that liquid/vapor has to go some where. those vapor condensors are 32 years old at least... thats a long time for a piece of plastic. so if its got cracks in it, just remove it. what float? the gas tank sending unit float? carb float? new gas cap will make it worse...... . |

Thank you for the response. It is just leaking from the bottom of the canister. It is a slow trickle after the car is shut off but not while it is running.

I make a nice replacement for that plastic evap condensor. its made from al.
aluminum doesnt leak= problem solved. since you are referring to the charcoal canister- the charcoal is saturated with gas liquid. have to replace it, or disuse it. pull it off and set the canister in the sun for a week it'll eva poor rate the gas out of it, then slip it back in. Csaba? May just be a coincidence.
Another Vandor from Texas. A properly functioning evap emissions system will be able to deal with liquid in the charcoal canister. Their main function is to absorb the over fill fuel quantity. The draw off is restricted usually through an orifice so the liquid doesn't overwhelm the engine. Bad if it is leaking as it indicates a fracture in the bottom of the housing and that meant it is time to 86 it and install a new one. |

So what is actually leaking the vapor storage canister, also known as the carbon canister which is located under the hood, or the liquid/vapor separator which is located inside the rear fender.
If everything is working properly liquid fuel should never make it to the vapor storage canister. The liquid/vapor separator on the other hand does return any liquid that condenses from vapor, or that gets forced up into it back to the tank via gravity. The rubber hose that drains that liquid back to the tank has probably rotted if that is indeed where it is leaking. |

What exactly is leaking the vapor storage canister that is under the hood on the passenger side or is it actually your liquid vapor separator back inside the drivers side quarter panel?
I'll assume it's actually your liquid vapor separator that is leaking. Most likely it is the drain hose has rotted. Be careful when removing the old hose(s), carefully slit the hose so it can be removed w/o yanking to avoid breaking the nipple. |
