Default radiator overflow

Have an early 1961 80 w/ 152 engine. There is no overflow for my radiator, just a rubber tube that hangs down the side of the radiator. Is this correct? Was there supposed to be an overflow tank somewhere on this truck?

You can get one from the auto parts store which is universal and bolts to the firewall/inner fender. I think they're important. You'll need to use a later style rad cap which has a return valve to let the coolant return to the cooling system as the engine cools.

I like a recovery tank because it keeps me from having to add coolant and they'll give you a visual level of coolant in the system.

The hot rod shops have a cool overflow tank that is a chromed cylinder about 1 3/4" in diameter in several lengths. It mounts right beside your radiator using existing bolts and is not too expensive. My 67 Stepside with the hot 392 used one successfully.

HERE is an overflow tank from JC Whitney. I have one of these in each of my 800s. The reservoir tank is a good upgrade as it keeps the radiator full of coolant and eliminates air in the system.

The very one I had Roy! The photo shows them upside down - the pipes protrude from the bottom.
