Default Project "Stampy" - 71 800B

Hi all!

I have owned many Scouts in the past but this will be my first serious overhaul. This is probably going to be a slow build because im going to have to figure everything out as I go along. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I absolutely love the IH community and Im proud to be a part of it

Soooo "Stampy" is a 1971 800B 304/t98/d20 its a pretty nice little rig. Almost no rust. Its even got power steering! Yay one less thing to do

A couple months ago I took a flight out to Eugene and drove it back home to Tacoma about 250 miles. Half way home it started leaking a lot of oil from the valley pan and fuel pump.

I started digging into the engine a bit to replace the seals but then I found a newly rebuilt 304/t18/d20 twin stick. The motor has an aluminum 4bbl, and a mild cam. I got a screamin deal on the package so back to Eugene I went to pick it up..... almost anytime I buy something IH it comes from Oregon I think I might have to move there.

Short term goals:
Swap in new motor/trans/tcase
Rust repair
New paint

and maybe...
D44's
SOA + 2.5" springs
Reverse Shackle
35's

Long Term:
High steer
Lockers front/rear
Better roll cage
Soft top
Corbeau seats

** I am looking to buy a pair of D44's anyone local have some for sale? **

Looks like it shouldn't be to hard to get that thing up to speed before you know it! That motor/trans combo looks killer!

That's very cool! <<< Root beer...

With the 4V carb, could that be a 345? Even better if it is.
There's a spot on the block that will tell you, but you'd have to ask one of the smarter guys here, about where that is.

Here's some more good news:
Since your Scout originally came with a V8, it also came with a rear dana 44. So you'd only need the front Dana 44 with open knuckle (best reason for the upgrade is the open knuckle Dana 44 will reduce your turning radius by about 3').
Looks like the previous owner did some nice updates (like the recessed filler necks). Hopefully you still have access to ask the P.O. questions.

Very nice Scout. Will look forward to your progress.

August 2012, "the build" begins:
4BT, 4L60E, Dana 300 w/Tera-Low, Linked, lifted and stretched (just a bit).

LOL

Its the 304 I checked the stamp, I geuss they dont make the aluminum intake for the 304 anymore so lucky me!

I thought the d44 from a Scout II is wider then the rear d44 in an 800? Is there any differences in strength?

Got the motor out today!

This was the first time I pulled a motor and it was way easier than I thought it was going to be, took probably 5 hours total and thats because everything is coated in a half inch of oil but now that ive done it once the next time will go way faster!

Ok question, how do you remove the shifters on a dana 20? I left it on this time but it would have gone smoother without it.

Im not sure if Im going to go SOA or not, im thinking about keeping it this height. Have yet to decide. Really depends on if I can find a pair of D44's for the right price but no luck yet.

Next up is to prep engine bay for paint. Im going to repainting the Scout white and switching to a half cab.

Sittin in my dads shop took half a day to clear out a spot for it!

As you can see I started painting the old motor.... top half looks nice lol

I unbolt the entire transfer case and drop it before I pull the engine/trans together. I'm not sure if thats the best way...but it works for me.
