Hi all, Does anyone know what type of Wix oil filters will fit the SV IH engines? I'm using AC Delco now, but I'm not happy with their new design with smaller can sizes. The old style PF2 filters were about an inch taller then recent ones. I still read good reviews for Wix.
Wix number for oil filter I use is #51515 This is the very popular ford filter, I believe used pretty much on all fords from the 50s on. It is the same specs as the afformentioned 51452 with the exception of the burst pressure. The 51515 is rated at 290 PSI and the 51452 is rated at 415 PSI, which is not a factor with an IH engine. The 51515 is cheaper and more readily available, so that is what most use.
If talking spin on type filters, #51515 will only fit the SV engines that have the angled filter mount, the vertical truck type oil filter runs a different filter and there is also a canister type filter as well.
Paul, The 51515 will fit the vertical truck filter if you change the center mounting pipe just as the two angled filter mounts can use the larger truck filter if you change the center mounting pipe given that there is room for it. I got my pipe fitting at the IH dealer.
The only difference between the 51515 and the 51452 Is the 51452 has a stronger can with a higher burst pressure. I've never seen a SV make much oil pressure so the burst pressure is a mute point.
FWIW, both these filters are also available at just about any New Holland dealer. Though you'll probably pay a little more there. Wix 51515 = CNH 86546614 = Motorcraft FL-1A Wix 51452 = CNH 87800083 Napa Gold and Carquest are both Wix filters with different packaging. Drop the first digit of the Wix number for Napa Gold. Carquest changes the first 2 digits, but can easily cross the Wix numbers. Will Marsh
I use the NAPA 1773 gold. Fits and gives larger capacity for oil. The application for this filter is the VW Eurovan. Being NAPA it is made by WIX. Have been using this filter for years.
Both of my trucks ('71 1310 and '74 200) have the angled mount. There's plenty of room for the filter so I don't expect problems there. I just ordered a box of 12 Wix 51542 filters at Rockauto. That should keep me going for a while.
Bad idea there. That is a 32 micron filter. It's designed for flow over filtration. The 51515 and 51452 are 20 micron filters. "Nominal Micron Rating: 32" http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=51773
also its a difference in the oil by pass valve pressure in the two wix filters 452 is higher than 515
