Take a stand to save the land.

In Vol. 3 of Popular Off Roading, Dec. 1978 issue, on page 68, I found the following article. It is about a booklet published by IH in 1978. I scanned this article so you could read it, but I'm out of photo space, so I have retyped it for you. The booklet, discussed by the article below, was put in every Scout glove box in 1979. Does anyone have a copy of this booklet, I'd love to read a copy?

Here are the two scans I was able to get.

    --- Article ---
"We believe... the people who use their four-wheel drive vehicles to enjoy our nations great outdoors have a natural love and respect for the land."

"They and their families depend, in large measure, on the availability of public lands for their hunting, camping or just plain exploring."

These are the opening paragraphs of a new booklet entitled "Take A Stand To Save The Land." Developed by International Harvester, as part of the company's commitment to four-wheel drive enthusiasts, the booklet details ecologically sound 4x4 driving practices.

The ojectives of the program are to: (1) Remind public land managers that policies which deny a four-wheel drive vehicle operator reasonable access to public lands can be an abridgement of the very rights of thousands of concerned, environmentally-minded citizens; and (2) Encourage four-wheel drive vehicle operators to help diseminate the idea that responsible 4x4 driving is compatible with the environment.

The booklet contains a self-mailer post card which offers "I Took A Stand ..." a bumper sticker and patch to those four-wheel drive vehicle owners who sign and mail the cart to IH.

Specifically, the "I Took A Stand..." program requests 4x4 vehicle owners to reaffirm their intent to preserve the environment - to limit off-pavement travel to established roads and vehicle trails, and to not disturb vegetation or special sites with historic or natural interests.

"The program's basic direction is to recognize that four wheelers have a right to use public lands for recreational purposes; however, it emphasizes self-regulation as absolutely necessary for protection of the environment," sates F.J. Wendling, Manager of Scout Marketing for International Harvester's North American Truck Operations.

Wendling noted that in 1979, the "I Took A Stand..." booklet will be included in the glove compartment of new Scouts. Additional copies will be distributed to four-wheel drive clubs, international Scout dealers, recreational facilities, public parts and government agencies.

    --- End of article ---

If any of you have a copy of this booklet, I'd love to read it. I live in Portland Ore.

    Thanks

I recall similar publications by Jeep (my dad bought a '78 Cherokee new), and Ranger Rick magazine.

What part of Portland are you in? I don't think that I have met you. Have you gone to the IH club meetings in Salem?

I just came across my original copy of this booklet that came with my 1980 Scout II. I sold the Scout 15 years ago and just stumbled across this with some old stuff. It's in very good to excellent condition. If there's interest, I'll post in classified.

    Hi Dr. Maserati

Unfortunately there was a misunderstanding between me and Super Scout Specialists. He had phoned me to let me know that the pamphlet was on back order. He had to source a printer. I said fine, send it out when its ready.

On my invoice the pamphlet showed in B/O status.

After 4 months of waiting I contacted SSS to ask about the long delay. Turns out that SSS had actually canceled my order for the pamphlet and was waiting for me to reorder the item. The gentleman I spoke w/ over the phone at SSS said that it would take them a month to source a printer. I said "thats what you told me last time when I placed my order."

Needless to say I was disappointed with them. Why they did not follow through, resupply themselves, fill my B/O and bill me for the product....I'll never know. I did not re-order the reproduction pamphlet, instead I will source a real one some day. From someone like Fornesto perhaps.

    Cheers

Hey guys! I'm a bit new to this site as I'm looking through resources while restoring my 77 scout 2. However, My friend's uncle gave me some books when he heard I was working on a scout and among them was a full shop manual for a 78, a color scheme pamphlet, an accessory book, and the very same booklet you're speaking of. If you'd like, I could scan the whole booklet and post it on another thread for you (some pages are a little chewed up from mice or something). I wouldn't be willing to part with it easily though (Sorry).

Have one as well. Attached a rough pic of the patch and bumper sticker page. Nice black and white artist work based on the SSII and Rallye .

One of my favorite parts is the first sentence under equipment
Oh, just in case a picture is too confusing the patch is labeled 'patch' and bumper sticker is labeled 'bumper sticker'..... ........:smartass:

So I was googling around to see if the post card would still work or not and found this thread. See the multiple messages for the full book (27 pictures total)
