After all these years I can't believe the installation instructions for the large curved 68 Travelall (Round-Body in general) rear quarter windows has not been posted up? At least I can't find it...

My 6" thick manual has every window procedure except the large wrap-around rear quarter window installation! Am I missing a supplement?

From what I have gathered reading what I can find, the quarter window goes in from the INSIDE, starting at the front and working back (I think?). So many questions without the OEM MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS...

Do you install the rubber on the window, then seat the bottom edge and pull the cord from the outside, or just place it against the body lip pull the entire edge? Where do you start?

Let's get this procedure out there. Someone must know and have the original instructions from International Harvester. How about an old-schooled window installer that has done them in the past. Spread your knowledge! The new guys are confident-inexperienced bozo's in some cases. We don't want our most valued window possesion to get C~R~A~C~K~E~D!!!

I'm ready to install my rear quarters with very good pliable old rubber temporarily while I get it road worther. They will be pulled back out down the road when paint eventually gets done, so I will be doing this 4 times.

I know you can take them OUT without destroying the rubber and window as well, because the set of windows I have were taken out and the rubber is fine. I bought these from a large IH enthusiast barn/warehouse sale after a death in the family years ago up in the SF bay area. Swung by to pick them up on the way back from Colorado in person to select the best pair with rubber of the "batch" they were selling on eBay. Someone knew what they were doing back then. We need that knowledge ASAP!

PS: Here's a 2005 post ending in an unanswered question by one of the IH masters himself:

Jim, did you ever figure this out?

I have not put mine in yet,I took them out about 10 years ago.How are they in a 57 chevy wagon, basicly the same design,if its in from the inside, there has to be instructions some where.I have asked some older IH employies, found people that have installed headliners in them, fenders, seats but no window installer. No glass shop around here will touch them.I would highly recomend painting around the window before installing it,the more you put it in and out,the better chance of breaking it.

They definitely go in and out from the INSIDE. And they are touchy. I won't do them, period. Ask local car clubs who does their curved glass installation and have him do it. Much cheaper than finding another hunk of curved glass!

I'm doing mine as soon as I get the new seals for them.
In my opinion it is best to put the rubber onto the glass, put a string in the lip and start pulling the string in the lower rear corner.
Go up until you're just passing the upper rear corner, then start at the lower rear with the other end of the string and work your way around, going bottom rear to bottom front, then to upper front and on to upper rear corner.
This is definitely a two or three person job...

Let me know how it works out.... :D

Sounds like some more research is in order... I'll see if I can find a Nomad club. Would a Nomad manual have the Chevy installation instructions?

Might check with Boyd's down the street in Stanton, CA too. i'm sure they have done at least a few Nomad's in their day.

If anyone still has contact with some of the old IH factory workers and can put in an inquiry that would be great. Maybe one to the IH Restoration groups have the instructions in their files somewhere.

How about Binder Books? Do you think they would have a supplement on this? It sure would be grand to have instructions with pictures.

Thanks for all help in locating the proper way to do these.

Pulling it is easy if you are not trying to save the seal, cut the seal on the outside with a razor, with someone one the inside to catch the window

Re: Step-by-step instructions on installing 68 Travelall rear quarter window glass ne

I've done the Google search several times myself with no luck also. JJ is right about removing the safe way. Sacrafice the rubber to insure the window. The rubber is usually bad anyway. I'll be doing just that when I do the removal of the initial install without the body repainted. The thing for me is the repaint may not be happening for quite a while. Heck, it's taken me 10 years to get it to this point! :taz:

JC don't forget to nab the inside rubber piece that is screwed on at the rear of the window. Grab the other side too if that window is broken. Those may be hard to find in the future.

Watching this thread closely as I'm about to do all the seals on my 67 1200. (Seems to ultimately be cheaper to buy the whole lot instead of bits and pieces over time).

I've been warned that large expanse of glass + hard old seals = cracked glass when you hit a pot hole so figured I'd get something more flexible in there asap.

Been told to glue in with butyl by one of the seal vendors, but may well take to an experienced glass guy given the rarity of the glass....

Re: Step-by-step instructions on installing 68 Travelall rear quarter window glass ne

Most of the "glass guys" haven't dealt with rubber seals with or without sealing strips Since the 80's almost all of the windshields (for cars and light trucks) have been glued in. The main reason is the airbag uses the glass to help keep it in front of the passenger. So having a glass that can pop out is not a good thing. It also saves time and is cheaper in the assembly of new cars. Good glass companies train their on the more common installations. A friend who was a local manger at Auto Glass Specialist told me that he was the only one trained on the GM vinyl roof with the tuck under. So not all tech are well trained.

Your best bet is to check with car clubs to find out who has done this type of glass. Remember that even if you get an auto glass shop to install it , the risk is all on you if it breaks that is too bad but they will not be held responsible.

But I would not glue it in.

Re: Step-by-step instructions on installing 68 Travelall rear quarter window glass ne

I worked for Binder Books years ago and looked for this specific information. As far as I can tell, the IH instructions have been lost somewhere. I am still keeping my eyes open for 60's era service material hoping to find it, but as of today I have NEVER seen IH produced installation instructions.

My advice is much like Doc's, find someone who is highly recommended and pay them to do it.

Re: Step-by-step instructions on installing 68 Travelall rear quarter window glass ne

Tried researching the Chevy Nomad rear quarter window installation thinking it may be similar, but it appears they are held in by clips of some sort.

Anyone know of another model Chevy, Ford or Dodge variant that had larger rear wrap-around quarter windows held in by basic rubber seals that I can research procedures for?

Here's the basic install of glass with rubber seals illustrated on a truck cab rear window:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvcJ_lU_VpQ

Not sure if putting the cord cross at the bottom center is standard for windows shaped like these rear quarters. It seems to be standard for windshields and flat side and back windows.

Use of a soapy string/cord is highly recommended:

    http://autorepair.about.com/od/fixityourself/ss/soapy_string.htm

I hear KY Jelly works too. Can be messy, but easy cleanup with water just like soap.

PS: Boyd's isn't in Staton, CA anymore. :( Still researching...

This is a correct assumption. :D
Look at the shape of the glass, and take a few minutes to think about where to place the cross of the string, and where the glass should be seated first.
Then re-read my post earlier in this thread.

Re: Step-by-step instructions on installing 68 Travelall rear quarter window glass ne

    Paul -

So far the one response I have received is to start in the bottom center just like any other window, then work forward towards the front of the Travelall and up the front edge, while pressure is being applied from the inside pushing the window forward and down to seat it fully and all the way forward in the window seal groove. Next work up the back curved section and across the top from each end finishing in the center top (I think), just like any other window. New flexible seal (or very good used flexible rubber only, no hard rubber) and two people manditory; three people much better! Two on the inside applying pressure and direction, and one pulling the cord on the outside.

I will post up this individuals description as soon as I get his approval. He is a long time experience IH guy, but I don't believe a window specialist by any means.

I'm still hoping to get more opinions from experienced installers if I can find them...

I still think the way I suggest will put less strain on the glass. The rear curved section will slide into position first, kinda like when you scoop up a spoon of sugar (or any other product to your liking), and the straight much larger section will follow.
Anyhow, new rubber is an essential part of the equation...

Re: Step-by-step instructions on installing 68 Travelall rear quarter window glass ne

I'm thinking just the opposite, because that is the location of the large rubber screw-on piece that holds the window in place under strain. It seems to follow that you would end at the location of the screw-on retainer, but I could be wrong... :cornfused:

The more opinions the better and those from people who have done it get the most weight if we can find them. I believe the source of the method I described has installed them before.

Re: Step-by-step instructions on installing 68 Travelall rear quarter window glass ne

Okay, Isa Ismail was nice enough to respond to my inquiry. Here is what he recommends:

"First off, Please take my instructions at your own risk as I will not be held liable for improper install of glass.

You need 2 to 3 guys. Start with a fresh seal on the glass, lube vigorously with soapy water or WD40. wrap draw string around seal with ends meeting on bottom in middle. Have guys on each end hold glass up from inside while draw string is held to the outside. Have guys hold glass firmly in place, lift up on string towards front of TA and pull out towards front first and up pillar at same time guys are also pressure sliding glass toward forward pillar. Once confirmed it is towards front then continue with other string towards curved section and up as steady pressure is applied outward with glass being pulled towards front of TA. Continue pulling string up from curved side as steady pressure is still carefully applied then both ends of string meet in the middle top.

Hope my instructions work for you. Good luck!

    Sincerely

As most of you here know the Ismail's have extensive experience with IH's. We all can understand his "disclosure" at the beginning as well. Many thanks Isa!

What large rubber screw on thingy? There's no such thing on any Travelall that I have seen so far. Maybe it's because all I have ever seen had barn doors?

At the very back edge of the window, there is a rubber peice between the seal and the body on the inside, held in by 2 philips head screws,it cant be removed once the window is installed. They seem to be just as rare as the windows do.
