Yes I searched but could not find the answer. I am currently refreshing a 304 that has been on an engine stand in my garage for over 15 years. It is out of a 79 scout ii. I am trying to determine if the pistons are stock sized. The inscription on the top say z23 319131-c2. Is this a standard bore piston? To my knowledge this engine has never been rebuilt. Still had the original ih steel style head gaskets already purchased some stock rings but I want to be sure

Best to measure them to know for sure. Measure bore if they are still installed.

If stock it will have " std" under #. If oversized it will/should be stamped. Post up a pic of piston.

1 quick way to find out is place a ring in cylinder. See if you have a gap or not. I file fit my to have a .020 gap.

You left out a 9 on that number; it should be 391931-C2:

Even so, neither of my two scout books list it.

I just found a set on ebay # 391 931 C2, with rod # 216 113 R1.... This set was out of a 71- scout 800a 304. Standard bore. CANNOT find # in any of my parts books.

Thanks standard bore. I am good to go. I used to spend a lot of time on here 10-15 years ago back when it was the other forum. I gained so much scout knowledge from here. It's great to see it is still active and the familiar experts are still helping folks out. Thanks Jeff

Service Parts part numbers were often different than production numbers because of they way they were purchased even though the part may not be different.

Yes, and that is sometimes noted in the Parts Books.
Jeff, out of curiosity I searched for that (both on Ebay, even under Sold items; and on the internet) but didn't find it. Could you provide the link to what you found?

So I did this check today just to be sure. rings almost touch end to end when placed in the cylinder. I did not check with my feeler gauge but the cylinders are definitely not over bored.
