Hello everyone I'm new to binder planet and wanted to share my new truck. I recently just purchased a 1979 s1724 crew cab with a 345 and a 5 speed transmission. I'm going to be using the truck to pull my toy hauler once. How does the 345 do towing in the bigger s series trucks? Or possibly should I look at swapping dt360 or dt466 in it? Planning on going to Colorado from Missouri with it so itll definitely see some steep grades. Any input is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Welcome!
What a good looking truck, especially for a 79.
I know the 345 and 5 speed is a great combo, but I will wait for the S Series gurus to chime in on it with that truck.
    Have fun with it.

    Welcome aboard, and neat ride!

You might want to start saving now to fuel that 345 if the 304 in my considerably smaller truck is any indicator: it's thirsty.

Hi there, did you decide to keep the 345 or go with a diesel? I'm in a similar situation myself. I'm looking to do a DT360 swap with an AT545 trans.

I have a 2000 4700 with a 466 and 545 Allison. It is fine pulling around town, but a dog at highway speed. Torque converter on a 545 doesn't lockup. I would suggest a 5 or 7 speed manual. Just my 2 cents
