I have a '76 loadstar 1700 with mv404, IH 5 speed, 2speed rear end. This truck has 26k original miles! A tech center in Oklahoma used it to move a mobile classroom so it's short wheelbase(gonna put an IH pickup bed on it). Has the old under-dash ac that works! AM radio works! Still has the instructions for the radio and the ac warranty info and when it was installed! And the line setting ticket is still in it. Hopefully I uploaded the pics correctly.. 20190818_165522.jpg
Anyways, the previous owners thought the engine was a 345(it is no doubt a 404) and they threw a bunch of parts at it to try to get it running, turns out all it needed was all the connections on the wiring harness cleaned and a carb rebuild, ole girl fired right up runs awesome! However I have not had any luck finding 404 parts, parts stores can only pull up SV engines... And I haven't had any luck yet online. I'm assuming all the ignition components will work, because they are so far, (holley gold box ignition). I bought a water pump for a 345 before I figured out it was a 404, will it still work??? It appears to be the same.. And I believe I need spark plug wires, will any IH v8 plug wires work???
Thank you all for your help, and sorry for the long winded post.

In my opinion, 392 plug wires may fit.
Or try wires for a Ford 460.

Water pumps for the SV engines are completely different than the ones for the MV series, you say it appears to be the same? Yes, we need some pictures and if you can sure would like to see the Line Setting Ticket too.

When the water pump came in, I just looked it over and looked at the one on the truck, and just from a quick look, it appears to be the same, that was before I figured out it's a 404. I'll check it out more later, the water pump on it still works, just the bearing is going out, it wobbles slightly. Unless that's just how they do? ‍♂️ gonna put one on it anyway, what would it hurt. As long as it's the right one!!

Crazy thing is, those big mirrors that are on it are bolted to the cab right above the drip rail on each side and in the middle above the windshield. Soooo, I dont know if IH put those on it, or the school did it and directly disregarded that instruction

If you run into problems finding a water pump for that engine, you might contact Flying Dutchman. He does great work for a reasonable price: water-pump-rebuilders.com

I saw a new old stock IH Renewed MV water pump over at my dad's place the other day. If you can't find one, I'm sure he would be happy to fix you up.

We used to have a fleet of IH Medium Duty (Loadstars, S-Series) with 345's, 392's and MV-404's and as much as I like SV engines, the 404 was a bit more durable/long-lasting than the SV, at least in our fleet of between 10-20 at times. Main drawback is finding parts.

Good to hear, lol! I dont plan on working this truck any. Just gonna put an old pickup bed on it and make a few car shows here and there and just parade around in it. I love seeing old cars and trucks on the road. Hopefully I can get many many more years out this old thing.

Gonna attempt to put this on it. Between me and my brother we should be able to do all the metal work, extend the fenders and extend the front of it a few inches. Get the body shop down the road to paint it 20191208_162717.jpg
