When you don’t want to pay top$ for side markers... make your own out of scrap metal!!

Been working in body on passenger side. Cut out some large rust patches on hardtop and at now debating just buying one with less rust. The drivers side of hardtop is not in that bad of shape, but passenger side is very rough, inside and out.

Also just got the exhaust pipes and muffler put on... roughly $300 doing it myself. I took info from Huth cards, bought pipe, marked where bends were along with each angle and took to a friend who had hydraulic bending machine.
I used welded thrush muffflers from advanced auto. I’m pleased with what I have so far.
Here is a link to short video after both mufflers - a few spots weren’t welded yet, only clamped.

The next 2 photos are important... and I’ll explain afterwards... 002BCA4A-86F5-42C6-A4BF-B1BF0A5A1CBB.jpeg 33880A48-50D3-48D3-9002-BC918388064A.jpeg

My wife wanted a coffee table for her office, so I built her one on Saturday. I used teal oil and when I finished, I discarded the paper towels I used in a box of trash... that I mistakenly set in the back of my scout.
20 hours later, at 11pm at night a neighbor was banging on my front door saying there was a fire in my backyard. The box of trash I had back there spontaneously combusted (I’m assuming from the teal oil, and now my project is almost ruined.

I do not keep my battery hooked up unless I’m driving or testing electrical components. I take the battery out each one after use and put on a trickle charge in my shed.

Here is almost 3 years of hard work and thousands of dollars. I’m still in shock. I’ve spent everyday and every evening working on this scout. The engine and frame may be salvageable, but that may be it.

    Again.... I’m still in shock.

Where'd the fire start in your extended wiring from the doors?

Absolutely terrible. Got to be a crushing feeling. I always cringed about this while I was building mine over 2 years. Hard to get insurance on an unappraised vehicle too.

C361C347-A837-423E-B2F0-896E22EFA9B6.jpeg There really are no words to describe this feeling. I’m sooo saddened to hear about this. It’s an awful thing to have happen.

Last July my sons Javelin caught on fire in his garage while he was 1/2 way through a year deployment in Iraq. He was in the process of fixing it up and didn’t have "auto” insurance on it. Total loss. After that happened I called Hagerty Insurance. Found out I could get auto insurance on a project car while I'm working on it. We would agree on the amount and I think I’d need to send them a picture. As I recall $8K coverage was $69-$80 a year. I need to go on and get that done.

Again Daniel, I really hate that this happened. Mark

Thanks guys for the support - sorry for you all who have experienced the loss of time, energy, and creativity. I know Bill Hamilton lost his shop - torqumonster1, sorry about your sons car, too.

Some more background on what this car means for me: I was an ordained minister for 14 years (master/doctorate in theology)... I changed careers August of 2017 and decided that along with taking a break from church I was going to do something on weekends that I had not had time to do previously. I decided to rebuild an older car with limited funds, knowledge, etc. my build started on my birthday of 2017 (September) when I bought a 72 S2.

In short, thus build means a great deal to me and is symbolic of my transition away from previous career and the life of a minister.

Here are some pics of where I’ve already started cleaning up. Additionally, there are pics of the donor vehicle, or the vehicle I started with.

    some observations:
    • It seems that the front panels on 73 are fine, but the windshield frame, doors, rear outer and inner panels need to be addressed.
    • The bed will need replaced.
    • Still fuel in my 33 gallon tank, so I think it is still good.
    • Fuel pump just below passenger door on frame seems untouched, including the wiring not being melted.

    From my spare parts/donor vehicle:
    • I think I can use the windshield frame, but it needs some work.
    • I can possibly reuse the doors, but need to fix where I’ve hacked away on them when pulling items.
I need some guidance (and would love anyone’s input) on the path forward.

Do I order new panels and bed as described above, or remove the entire body and start over from frame???

I will definitely need a new hardtop, lol.
