Anyone that knows me is aware that I am really at heart a full size guy. But we did have a really nice '79 Scout II that I sold after we had worked on for many years and was the property of Mrs JJ. So we weren't really looking but we were. Back in April of 2016 I spotted this gem on Craigslist in Tucson. It was a super clean 2 owner truck with all the paperwork going back to 1976. Of course, like all good truck buys it came with spare parts. Mike Moore of Scoutco is one of my best friends, and I asked him to fly out with me and drive it home...

The great thing about Southwest is that you get free baggage. So we brought along tools, belts, hoses, spare parts (water pump, fuel pump, loaded front rotor, etc) and figured that we could repair anything along the way if need be. The PO had converted it from a auto to standard using parts from a diesel Terra that he had sitting in the cactus. He was a really nice and helpful person. Along the way too, he had torn all the interior out of it and replaced the '76 grill with a '74 grill.

It took us three days, and we stopped along the way for photo ops. We only had two issues, 1) the windshield wiper blades were shot and we did the swap in Lordsburg NM, borrowing a drill from the maintenance guy at the hotel we stayed at and 2) The windshield gasket had shrunk so it leaked. A fun trip!

Here are the original photos from the Craigslist ad. No rust except the hardtop was rusted out from the use of spray foam and where the AC condensation line had leaked and the carpet held water on the passenger side, none other. Pics later in the thread to prove that when it was sand blasted, but more before that :)

And now, the controversy. I bought it because it was a really clean truck. I didn't even know what a Patriot Scout II was. This was airbrushed on the rear quarters. Since I had all the documentation I knew it had been repainted in the early 90s as I had a receipt for it.

Is it a Patriot or not? Honestly I don't know or care. But there is a thread and Jim Allen of the International Scout Encyclopedia weighing in on the subject and on mine:

So up until this spring, we drove it and enjoyed it. If the reader recalls, it had a 4 speed and transfer case that had been swapped into it from a diesel Terra. I sold that dana 300 and t19 wide to an off roader and did some trading with my friend Levi at Old Iron Offroad and got a t19 close and dana 20. Jason Roedel or Roedel Brothers via Doug Scott here in Tennessee sourced me a perfect and correct Wedgwood blue dash pad. I also did some trading with Jeff Ismail of IH Parts America and got a perfect '76 grill. John Glancy of Super Scout Specialists found me a door panel and I got another set from Randy Groenhoff of GRC. Thanks to all my friends at Scoutco, Roedel Brothers, Scott Services, IH Parts America, Old Iron Offroad, Super Scout Specialists, and GRC.

And all was well in the hood, until my time came up with the body shop, and it was time to dismantle it. It was very exciting to see NO RUST, the bottom of the windshield frame was still shiny! I decided to take it all down to nothing and start over..

The body was done first, so it went to the body shop right after blasting.

Body shop got it done pretty fast. It required less than a quart of skim filler the body was in such great shape!

The only real repair was on the lift gate. The original one had rusted and we determined that the extra top that came with the truck was a better candidate. Don't worry, the original one lives on somewhere as that was part of the trade to Old Iron Offroad in the transmission exchange. Also, since the grill had been swapped out with an earlier one I pulled one from a parts truck that I had here in my IH graveyard.

Mike Moore gave me an NOS prize for the tailgate. Also, Dew the cat seems to like the tub too. Here it sits as of right now and meanwhile the frame came back from powdercoat.
