International engine spec.

    I'm looking for small V internal parts interchange. I guess I just don't know where or how to search. :stupid: I tried the B.P., B.B. and Google. I'm looking for crankshaft size, stroke, bore size and rod length.:confused:

    The 345/392 use the same crank and the 266-304 use the same shorter stroke crank, all 4 engines use the same bearings and seals. I think the smaller 2 use the same shorter, lighter rod. But the early 392 uses a unique rod but about 1975-76(?) they strengthened the 345 rod and used them in both the two larger engines.
    Cams and lifters are the same for all, rocker shafts are the same. Pushrods are the same for 266/304 but the 345/392 are longer. The heads are usually displacement specific but the *early* 392 will accept 345 heads increasing compression but the valves are smaller. The later improved cooling 392 block and heads are different and *will not* accept 345 heads
    There is no way to bore a 345 safely to 392, the castings are all displacement specific so the 345 block does not have sufficient cyl wall for the overbore. Or so I have read. Nor can you make a 304 into a 345 by changing the crank, the 345/392 has a taller block and it just will not work even though the 304 and 345 use the same piston.
    I have heard that the 266 will bore to 304 but I do not *know* this for sure.

    This is true. The 392 cylinders, 4 1/8" bores, are siameesed for increased wall thickness between cylinders while there is a 3/8" +- gap between the cylinders, 3 7/8" bores, in a 345 block. The siameese cylinders are one of the reasons the 392 had cooling issues in large trucks which led to the IC version which flows the water into the block instead of the head

    Can anyone verify this? Standard 304 pistons might be esier to find than oversized 266s.

    in the back of the Factory Service Manual in the section discussing engines there is a specifications section (2 pages) listing all of the engine specs for I4's and SV's 152 - 345. 392's are not covered in the Scout manuals because those motors were not available in Scouts

    Nope! :nono:No service manual, maybe Santa will bring me one for CHRISTmas.:yes:
    I was just doing a little thinking (see the smoke coming out my ears), maybe a 304 crank in a 392 block, 392 or Chevy rods, and custom pistons. Make a little winder with a short stoke and big bore.:taz: Just dreaming!:beer:

    Peruse the "Skunkwerks" forum for this kind of information. It has all been hashed out before.

    To the best of my knowledge, the 266 cannot be boired to 304.

    I hope he does.

    stroking a 304 is not a dream and you dont need the 392 block to do it. welded 304 crank, longer rods and custom pistons makes a very nice 383 with room to spare. a 392 can be taken all the way to 440-450 without a problem. plenty of block clearance, the only questionable area would be whether the big ends of the rods will pass the cam lobes since they get to be in pretty close proximety to each other.

    I can tell you who to talk to about this if you'd like, he already has the numbers worked out, and where to buy the rods and pistons. I'm kinda looking to build a 427 out of a 392 when money is available and that's just a stroke, still using 4 1/8 pistons; go to 4 1/4" and ya got a 440. I do like the idea of keeping the motor a little more square though or going wider like you are talking about. There's so much meat in these cranks you can do just about anything in terms of welding and offset grinding and, still have a strong sombich slingin' the slugs. It's only money. :D

    I guess the only place to find out the information I want is the factory service manual? :confused:
    I searched the "Skunkwerks" and I didn't find anything on a 304 crankshaft into a 392 block or any of the specification for crank size or rod length.:no:
    I thought this would be a "General IH Tech" question, if not maybe it will get moved to Skunkwerks.

    Hi

    I've got a 266 I have to rebuild and would really like to get the most CID out of it, can anyone recommend what I should do or get?

    Would also like recommendations on books, not really about the body/external stuff. More engine, wiring, etc.

    Can anyone please tell me if I can put 304 pistons in my 266? Would I need to change the conrods? What is this welding and offset grinding the crank? Can any engineering shop do this and how much must this be offset with?
    How BIG can I get my 266?
