This evening I started pulling the rear carpet aluminum trim. I got all screws out except 2. I plan to clean it and the screws and reinstall. [IMG]

Last night I got the transfer case and transmission drained and filled.
These updates aren't very exciting like other builds, but it helps me keep track of my progress.

Tonight I topped off the steering gear lube so it can drip on the concrete.
And I got my headlights to work by cleaning the dimmer switch.[IMG]

Well all of my steering gear lube leaked out.
Today I fixed my horn and reinstalled the bent front bumper.
The horn had a bad ground at the button and at the horn itself. I could hear the relay clicking after I cleaned the horn button so I removed the horn and put it to the grinder. I applied some dielectric grease and some toothed washers. [IMG]

Today I got 3 out of 4 blinkers working, finished removing the rear carpet trim and cleaned it, tested/painted the heater motor, freed the heater switch pull cable, verified that my e-brake handle is working and moving the cable as it should, and I let my 3 little girls give it a bath.
The Scout spent the weekend at our house and I was able to tinker more with it. It will go back to my friend's house where it stays out of the weather and on concrete.
I also found out that the left rear quarter wasn't replaced, it's just missing all the paint and is down to primer. I found original paint under the top to body seal on that side(see pic).

All lights are now working properly. The turn signal switch had a bad/loose wire near the plug, so I replaced it.

Nice to read about your progress Randy! It is fun to follow your progress. But, shouldn't you be following your daughters around this time of day (obviously joking). I'm now just a few short days away from pulling the battery, fuel tanks, etc. on my CS so no more driving for a year or two .

My steering gear leaked and was pretty much shot. After some research, or more specifically the difficulties of obtaining parts, I opted to have my steering gear rebuilt by Rock Auto who subbed it out to a big company who's name I don't recall. Cost me $330. Between that rebuild and cleaning 52 years worth of dried grease inside the drag link fittings, I can now say I have some steering feel (for a Scout anyways) with essentially no play in the steering wheel.

This evening I: removed, cleaned, semi-painted, lubed, and tested the passenger side wiper motor. It tested fine on my vintage Robinair 15021 vacuum pump that I recently scored from Craigslist so I replaced the short piece of hose that it connected to and called it good. I'll do the same on the driver's side soon.

With the Scout at our house for a bit, I pulled it next to the Travelall this morning to avoid some rain. After quitting my job 6 years ago to become a stay at home Dad, I now have one left at home. She likes to play lemonade stand in the Travelall with the windows down so she can take my order. I was able to troubleshoot the electrical while she was making my "lemonade". I know you were joking, but I figured you'd like the story.
Good luck on your tear down and don't forget the penetrating fluid to avoid broken bolts.

This evening I: installed a radiator shroud that I found on Craigslist in Oregon, and partially installed a new license plate bracket with light ( I still need to wire it).
The shroud came off a Scout 800 with a 196, but it bolted right in. No pics because I was working in the dark.
I used this license plate bracket from ebay:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-196...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
I also installed new Trico wiper blade refills.

So I guess when I drove the Scout to the exhaust shop I loosened up some crud and it got to the carb because I never got around to installing my fancy new filter.
I rebuilt the carb again and blew out the passages and after putting it all back together, it still won't idle and I have a leak from the fuel bowl and the the new filter where it drains.
    This is depressing sometimes.............
    I'm done until next week.

Hang in there Randy. In the few months since I've started playing with my (first) CS, I've had to order and reorder lots of patience pills! And on an unrelated note, I drove up to Coonrods today to see if he was able to locate a dash pad at Nationals (no luck ). I did, however, leave him a Benjamin for some small parts for CS #2.

Thanks. I posted it for sale I'm so frustrated.
It won't sell, but maybe it will teach it a lesson. Thanks for the encouragement!

    LOL!
Oh man, have I been there before.
Yeah, sometimes just a step back and a deep breath... or 20, to get things back on track.
Will look forward to reading a post where the carb is working great again, right after the new filter install.

I think I've got it all working. I still need to drive it around, but it' running the best it has. I don't trust it yet, so I'll drive it some and see what happens. Thanks for the reply, it helps!

So far so good with the engine!
I've been doing little things while it's at our house again, including:
    • Buffing some of the worst of the body with some rubbing compound to clean the stains
    • Cleaned the front right inner wheel well area and applied some undercoating. I will eventually do them all, but it takes a while to dry and I only had time for one today.
    • Removed the bent front bumper and sent it to my Father in law who is a Coppersmith/Master metal worker.
Plenty more to do, but it's slowly getting there.

Congrats! I'll bet it's nice to go from cosmetic to mechanical activities? :punk: Or perhaps just swap back and forth and sooner or later, it will all get done!
