my '70 T'all always blows out a plume of smoke upon starts. :(

The first thing I tried was replacing the valve seals and valve cover gaskets.

Then tried a different oil for high-mileage engines (altho it has around 35k).

I can't remember the brand (penzoil, perhaps?), but it has a higher viscosity and some amount of teflon in it. It's also supposed to fill in some of the small gaps in the cylinder walls or some such.

    Nothing seems to help.

    HALP!

What color is the smoke? Can you smell fuel in the smoke?

    Need more info.

If its a puff of white/blue smoke on startup, it's supposed to do that.

a puff smoke on start up is pretty normal for an international. It's not hurting anything, don't worry about it.

IH's use a o-ring type seal that leaks a little oil past for the valve guides. Helps logevity.

I really don't like teflon stuff, asking to clog up other areas as well IMO.

I run Shell Rotella-T in all my motors, gas and diesel.

Well I will go against the grain and say it is not supposed to be there it is just the result of the engineering and the way the engine sets in the vehicle.
I have completely eliminated the puff of smoke at start up and have documented on here before.

Just do a search with my screen name and puff of smoke and you should come up with several threads. If not then let me know and I will dig them back up.

It is a fairly simple fix.

I call that the "Scout fart".... let's you know it's alive!

It is absolutely normal.... however can be eliminated by (from my poor memory, so ignore erroneous info) 'replacing the umbrella seals'... or something like that.

If you do a search like "blue smoke" or something... you will find the ample threads directed to just this. Or just ask one of the oil wrench heads here like Dr Maz, Bill TheBoss, John D., or Shailor (where is Doug and why is he now "guest"??)
-they will tell you exactly what I referred to above.

    Puff = normal

    PLUME = not

    ;)

Could be a variety of things & some aren't engine related @ all. '70 T'All > could have the BW trans w/a vac modulator & it's sucking trans fluid into the intake, most noticable @ start up after 'puddling'. Same could be true of a bad power brake booster sucking fluid.

Color, smell, size could tell us more. :D

Extended vacation, compliments of JD. You know > "Buy a SM ...... " ;)

    Taste?...

    What's a 'SM...' ?
Doug pissed someone off? I thought that was MY job?

And while we are on the subject (we weren't actually), why are some of the modulators (!) not RED NAMES?

(pun intended:) ) I thought to be a Mod you had to pay your dues?

YEP! it's a combination of seals and WORN guids, LOTS of IH's do it, mine do.
What type of seal did yu use?, the "O"rings are suposed to be squised into the lower grove between the retainer and keepers, if you removed the springs the retainer pushed them down the stem and they are doing NO good at all!

I use the WHITE bottle Valvoline 20-50 in my trucks.

Time is $$$, how much $$$ ya got & how much info ya wanna know? ;)

Bill is on hiatus, JD & Jeff Bade are Admin, Mods are, evidently, Mods & 'dues' don't matter ... evidently.

PCV could be sucking oil on start up. Cheap to replace. No PCV &/or dump tube/plugged? Flame arrestor removed/incorrectly replaced w/a PCV? Condensation/coolant issue?

Guess it's time to go pull that dangling tailpipe off & see what happened there .....

I have been making a lot of trips to the hunting camp lately. My 304 has just started giving me the white smoke on start up, oil collecting behind the PCV, and leaking rear main seal. All three things happened in a weeks time. Any guesses as to what is going on?

white smoke would be coolant, not oil. oil burns blue. mine makes the traditional blue smoke on start up. not much and not worth tearing anything down for my money. i've owned a ford XL that smoked so much you could hide a school bus in the cloud. that's a problem!

How does scout crap taste?
I would say it(the smoking) is pretty normal, kinda like my scout leaking various fluids on the garage floor..if it isn't leaking them, then I assume I am running low :D
