here is a set of simple but affective rock sliders.

Here is a set of more complicated sliders.

Thanks Fred! I have made a few different styles and found that when using the tappered bearing set up with a trailer spindle seemed to break everytime. So this one I sleeved with a piece of DOM tubing and pressed in heavy bronze spacers that are oil impregnated. We will see how it holds up. But the bronze spacers are cheaper the replacing bearings and spindles. I am in the works of making a new style of pivot so be on the look out!

I just talk with the owner and he said they are Pro-Comp 15x10 with a 6-4 offset if that helps. He replaced his old rims because they would contact his springs at full lock.

What seems to break? The spindle or the bearings, just wondering I am in the process of building a tire carrier for my bud's heep xj. He bought the spindle and bearing set from rockstomper.com. Seems very stout!

I have had one break the spindle in half right where it goes throught the bumper and one break half way up from the bumper. But those are both on extreme off road truck. So it may just be that. But I know of another person in our club who lost his carrier on the trail when it broke the spindle off.

Its the cycling action of large tires (35") that cause the spindle to bust off. kind of like wiggling a paper clip back and forth. If the tire can rock a tad bit from front to back it will snap the 1" spindle. There was a vendor on this board that build one and 100 freeway miles later the tire fell onto the freeway.

How to fix the problem? Google a warn tire carrier and see how they support the hinge.

    this project pleases me... :D

recently on a ep of extreme 4x4 they did a tire carrier that swung down to allow the tailgate to open. It looked promising and sturdy but for the life of me i cant recall the vech it was on.

anyone seen a ex-skeleton on a scout with a roof rack for the spare? I seem to recall one of the aussie guys had this.

Yeah I did a similar thing by supporting the pivot point to the bumper for extra support. It makes a huge difference.
