I want to buy a new battery for my 1980 SD 33 and was wondering if anyone had a brand/model recommendation with the right crank amps etc.

    The right battery

    Bob,

The correct battery for a Diesel Scout is a "Series 31" Threaded-top style ( there are NO clamp posts, only threaded connections) Battery.

These are not available at Wal-Mart. NAPA has them in their Commercial series, specialty battery shops, and Most tractor shops have them. This is a VERY heavy-duty battery.

900 CCA on average, but some are as high as 1150 CCA.

The nice thing about a series 31 battery is, it has heavy duty plates, is resistant to vibration, and they last for YEARS. How does 5 to 10 YEARS grab you?

My 1980 Turbo-Diesel Scout had it's original Series 31 battery for 12 years before it died. I have the original owners documentation to prove it. It is still only on it's second battery and that one is working just fine.

Get a Series 31, pay the 70 to 100 bucks, and be happy, for a long time.

Could this series 31 battery be used, on a gas engine? I was using an Optima Red Top. The Deep cycles (Yellow) run like $190. $70- $100 sounds alot better fro that much power and length of use.

    battery for a gasser

    Dave,

Absolutely! As long as your battery box will hold it. I have seen gasser Scouts with non-recessed battery box locations.

I see no reason why you couldn't use a Series 31.

All MY Scouts have Series 31, but then again all of mine are Diesels :D .

In all seriousness, you should be able to use it with no worries. And the power available is something that those power hungry things like winches just LOVE.

    Keep on Dieselin',
